Associate athletic director Tom Sadler, Herman Frazier's right-hand man at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa for more than two years, is a finalist for the athletic director's job at Montana.

Sadler is one of five candidates, from an original pool of more than 60, who will be brought in for two-day interviews and public forums June 8 to 23, Montana announced yesterday.

Sadler said he is scheduled to visit Missoula in the middle of the month.

"I'm flattered but I think any other comments regarding that search should come from the University of Montana," Sadler said.

Sadler, a Michigan native who has degrees from Aquinas College and Arizona State, said he has no connections to the Grizzlies but, "it appears to be a good situation."

Sadler, 44, spent 20 years at ASU in various positions, where he first worked with Frazier. Sadler was Frazier's first major hire at UH.

At UH, Sadler oversees internal operations, including ticketing operations and facilities management.

The associate AD position at UH pays up to $110,736 per year. When 70-year old Don Read took the Montana job on an interim basis last year following the resignation of Wayne Hogan, the position was listed at $109,000.

Montana said the other finalists are Arizona State senior associate athletic director Tom Collins, Oregon associate athletic director Mike Marlow, Iowa State senior associate athletic director Calli Sanders and Montana development director Jim O'Day.

Montana is a Division I-AA football powerhouse with two national championships and competes in the Big Sky Conference.
