Hawai'i surfers tie for fifth in Roxy Pro

Kaua'i surfers Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly tied for fifth place in the Roxy Pro UK women's surfing contest.

The final day of the competition was completed yesterday in 1- to 3-foot waves at Perranporth Beach, Cornwall, England.

Ballard and Kennelly were eliminated in the quarterfinals and received $3,000 each.

Defending world champion Sofia Mulanovich of Peru won the contest, defeating Australia's Chelsea Georgeson in the final. Mulanovich remains the No. 1-ranked surfer on the 2005 World Championship Tour for women. The Roxy Pro was the fifth of nine events on the 2005 tour.

Among the Hawai'i surfers, Megan Abubo is No. 4, Ballard is No. 6, Kennelly No. 9 and Melanie Bartels No. 16.



Academics

BYUH water polo player honored

Vanja Kalabic, a senior water polo player at Brigham Young-Hawai'i, was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-America All-District VIII Men's At-Large First Team.

Kalabic, from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, is the career leader in goals (300) and steals for the Seasiders. The international business management major holds a 3.71 gpa.

In his career, Kalabic, the NCAA Division II Player of the Year in 2004, has earned first team All-American honors all four years.
