Campaign finance charges refiled

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu attorney Edward Y.C. Chun pleaded not guilty yesterday to two illegal campaign contribution charges that were refiled after the Hawai'i Supreme Court overturned his conviction earlier this year.

Chun's lawyer entered the plea at Honolulu District Court. A June 21 trial date was set.

Chun, 73, is accused of advising Food Pantry officials to write $5,000 in checks to former Mayor Jeremy Harris' campaign.

The legal limit was $4,000.

Chun pleaded guilty to one of the charges and received a 10-day jail term that he did not have to serve pending the outcome of the appeal. The second charge was dismissed.

In February, the high court ruled that the charge to which Chun pleaded guilty was defective.

City prosecutors recently refiled the charges.

Chun is expected to seek dismissal.
