HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Guard-inmate sex alleged at Halawa

Advertiser Staff

A corrections officer at Halawa Correctional Facility has resigned amid allegations that she was involved in sexual misconduct with an inmate at the prison, according to Department of Public Safety Deputy Director Frank Lopez.

Lopez said prison officials have forwarded a report on the incident to the state Attorney General's office, which will decide whether to pursue a criminal investigation.

It is a felony in Hawai'i for a corrections employee to have any sexual contact with an inmate.

Lopez said the corrections officer quit earlier this month, before an internal inquiry could be completed. He did not identify her.

Motorcyclist critically injured

A man was critically injured last night when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed on University Avenue.

Witnesses said the motorcyclist was speeding on University Avenue when he apparently lost control of his vehicle. Police said the motorcycle crashed at about 9:15 p.m. near Date Street.

The rider, a man in his 30s, was in "extremely critical condition" when he was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, according to Emergency Medical Services personnel. His condition was not available late last night.

Police closed all makai lanes on University Avenue between King Street and Kapi'olani Boulevard while they investigated.
