Share your advice on holding family reunions

For many in Hawai'i, nothing beats 'ohana. So when family members get together, the celebration — big or small — is always special. If you are planning a family reunion or have recently attended one, we'd like to hear from you.

How do you round up the loved ones? What goes into the planning process? Is there anything you'd do differently? Share your experience with us.

Write to zserrano@honoluluadvertiser.com, and include your name and contact number.

Sun-baked brownies

Since you've got cooking on the brain on Memorial Day, consider learning how to make your own solar oven, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in Pauoa Valley. Jon Abbott, director of the Fuel Farm, will teach participants how to build and use a starter model — made out of cardboard, aluminum foil and glass — and demonstrate how to prepare foods such as brownies. Cost is $10; $5 for students. To register, write to thehawaiigreenhouse@verizon.net or call 524-8427.

E-mail memoirs

A journal is a great way to chronicle your life events, a way to create a family heirloom for generations to enjoy.

"But who's got the time?" you ask.

Since you're probably already summarizing your life in e-mails to friends and family, print them out and paste them on the pages of a notebook, suggests author Oriah Mountain Dreamer in the June issue of Real Simple magazine.
