Clay finishes ninth at Austria meet

Olympic silver medalist Bryan Clay finished ninth yesterday in the decathlon at the Hypo Meeting at Goetzis, Austria.

Clay, a Castle High graduate who was second at the Athens Olympics, finished with 7,961 points. Roman Sebrle, who won gold in Athens, won yesterday's title with 8,534 points.

Clay got off to a fast start at the Hypo Meeting, winning the opening event, the 100 meters, in 10.51 seconds. In the second event, the long jump, Clay managed just 5.54 meters.

Clay's other results: shot put, 15.20 meters; high jump, 2.00 meters; 400 meters, 48.52 seconds; 110-meter hurdles, 13.94 seconds; discus, 49.88 meters; pole vault, 4.90 meters; javelin, 67.02 meters; and the 1,500 meters, 5:22.82.

Olympic champion Carolina Kluft of Sweden won her third straight heptathlon with 6,824 points.



BASEBALL

Ka'aihue homers in win

Kala Ka'aihue, a 2003 Iolani School graduate, hit a solo home run to help South Mountain (Phoenix) beat Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, 9-4, yesterday to stay alive in the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

South Mountain plays Hutchinson (Kansas) today in a lower-bracket game. The loser is eliminated from the eight-team tournament.

Ka'aihue went 1 for 5 yesterday. His home run came in a three-run third inning for the Cougars.



Sugar Mill game today

The seventh SportStan Sugar Mill Classic is set for 1 p.m. today at Hans L'Orange Park.

The game features high school seniors from around the state. The teams are divided between players from O'ahu Interscholastic Association schools (Hawaiian Stars) and players from Interscholastic League of Honolulu programs (Aloha Stars). Neighbor Island players are sprinkled on both squads.

Batting practice starts at 10 a.m. There is no admission charge.

State champion Punahou will be represented by four players: Shortstop Landon Nakata, outfielder Kaohi Downing, first baseman Kasey Ko and pitcher Jared Pate.

State runner-up Kailua has three players: Shortstop Tyler Harrison, second baseman Kekoa Su'a and pitcher Kevin Matsumoto.



GOLF

Kim tied for 23rd

Kimberly Kim of Pahoa shot a 70 yesterday and is tied for 23rd after the second round of the Thunderbird International Junior Tournament at Scottsdale, Ariz.

Kim, a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Waiakea Intermediate, is at 151. Spain's Azahara Munoz leads the 36-player elite field at 138.



SURFING

Irons brothers face off

The Irons brothers of Kaua'i will go one-on-one in the fourth round of the Globe WCT Fiji men's surfing contest.

The third round of the contest was completed yesterday in 8- to 10-foot waves at Cloudbreak, Tavarua, Fiji.

Three-time world champion Andy Irons and his younger brother Bruce Irons were the top scorers in the third round.

Andy Irons had near-perfect wave scores of 9.57 and 9.50 for a total of 19.07 in his victory over Florida's Peter Mendia.

Bruce Irons beat Australia's Richard Lovett. Bruce had wave scores of 9.8 and 9.33, giving him a total of 19.13, which was the best score of the day.

Two other Hawai'i surfers, Sunny Garcia and Fred Patacchia Jr., have yet to complete their third-round heat. Garcia and Patacchia are scheduled to face each other in the third round.
