Kaimuki's Mesa lit up the league

The second season of girls basketball in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's White Conference — the first in which Division II teams played a separate schedule — proved to be a success, with many competitive games and opportunities for the "little" player to shine.

The one who shined brightest was Kaimuki senior guard Flora Mesa, who was named the conference's Player of the Year in a vote of division coaches.

Mesa averaged 8.7 points per game and provided steady ball-handling, passing and floor leadership in helping the Bulldogs to a 14-4 record and runner-up finish in the nine-team conference.

She is joined on the White's all-star first team by junior teammate Paige Moi, 'Aiea senior Kalei Castillo, Kalani senior Megan Kamehiro and Waialua sophomore Chelsey Ramirez.

Kailua's Ramona Takahashi was named Coach of the Year after the Surfriders finished with a 10-6 record, including an upset of eventual conference champion Kalani.
