Bruce Irons advances in Fiji surf

Kaua'i's Bruce Irons scored two perfect 10s and advanced to the semifinals of the Globe WCT Fiji yesterday.

The entire fourth round and half of the quarterfinals were completed yesterday in 4- to 8-foot waves at Restaurants, Tavarua, Fiji.

In the fourth round, Irons scored a perfect 10 to upset his older brother, three-time defending world champion Andy Irons, 19.67-9.67. Andy Irons was assessed an interference penalty late in the heat, giving his brother the victory.

Bruce Irons scored another 10 in the quarterfinals to beat Florida's Cory Lopez, 19.40-18.10. Irons' combined scores from his two heats yesterday were 39.07 out of a possible 40.

Fred Patacchia Jr. of Hale'iwa also won two heats yesterday with near-perfect scores, but he has yet to complete his quarterfinal heat.

Patacchia beat Wai'anae's Sunny Garcia in the third round, 17.54-16.44. He then defeated Australian Joel Parkinson in the fourth round, 19.27-18.44.

Patacchia is scheduled to face South Africa's Travis Logie in the quarterfinals.



GOLF

Kim finishes 25th

Hawai'i's Kimberly Kim, one of two eighth-graders in the 36-player elite field, shot a 4-over-par 76 yesterday to finish in a tie for 25th at the sixth annual Thunderbird International Junior tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Kim, who had three birdies and seven bogeys, finished at 11-over 227 for the 54-hole event. Kim, 13, attends Waiakea Intermediate School on the Big Island.

Morgan Pressel, a 17-year-old from Boca Raton, Fla., won with 70—209.

Bronson Burgoon, of The Woodlands, Texas, beat Jamie Lovemark, of Rancho Sante Fe, Calif., on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to capture the boys title.

The tournament, which annually attracts the top junior golfers in the world, was composed of 84 boys and girls ages 12-18 from 16 states and 12 foreign countries.



BASEBALL

Ka'aihue leads JC win

Kala Ka'aihue, a 2003 Iolani School graduate, batted 3 for 3 and drove in two runs to help South Mountain (Ariz.) Community College beat Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, 11-8, yesterday to stay alive in the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

Ka'aihue had a solo homer, RBI double and single while walking twice and scoring three runs to lead the Cougars.

South Mountain (48-19) plays Iowa Western Community College (48-12) today, with the loser eliminated from the eight-team tournament.
