Trias adjusts college plans to enrich singing career

SHIFTING GEARS: Looks like Jasmine Trias, Hawai'i's "American Idol" finalist, is scrapping plans to attend Hawai'i Pacific University, where she had intended to jump-start a nursing career. At least, that's what she declared during her pre-"Idol" days. Evidently, she plans to enroll instead at USC or UCLA next fall to study business management or business law. That's what the Philippines media are reporting, according to her Web site. Trias, who turns 19 on Thursday, feels this will advance her career as a singer. ...

Similarly, Camile Velasco, the other Top 10 finisher from Hawai'i during Season 3, is at a music college in Los Angeles, poised to learn the ropes that would benefit her first CD, due early next year. ...

ITEMIZATIONS: Kris Kristofferson, a sometime Maui resident, will appear from 4:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Hana Film Festival in Hana. Among the highlights: Brittni Paiva at 3:50 p.m., John Keawe at 5:35 p.m., a screening of "Iz: The Man Behind the Music" at 8:40 p.m., and Ho'okipa at 9:45 p.m. ...

Tina Wolsborn, proprietor of the Inn at Occidental near San Francisco, is a Kit Samson fan and plays his recordings in the rooms and dining areas. She wanted to sell his music, too, in the hotel gift shop, so acquired a couple dozen of his "Somewhere in Time" discs during a recent visit. "I really feel good about it," said the Ala Moana Hotel keyboarder. Surely, Wolsborn will order up the newbie, "Encore," when it's available. ...

Samson and his Sound Advice will provide the music again in the next "Shall We Dance?" from 5:30 p.m. to midnight Nov. 25 at the Grand Ballroom of the Pacific Beach Hotel. Others on the bill: Anita Hall, Rolando Sanchez and Alfredo Romero; the Sound Advice singer will be Mila Mendoza-Yandell. Tickets: $50 with dinner. ...

TIDBITS: When Eddie and Myrna Kamae were at Borders in Sacramento, Calif., on a promotional tour, they encountered an auntie type who shared vintage photos (1949) of the performer. The woman generously offered the nostalgic photos to the Kamaes. ...

Riders on the Storm, featuring original members of The Doors, will perform Dec. 9 at the Waikiki Shell in a concert expressly for Honolulu Marathon participants. Ian Astbury, of The Cult, is the featured voice, and the band includes Doors originals Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger. 'Ukulele whiz Jake Shimabukuro also performs. ...

The crew of "You, Me and Dupree," the film shooting here with Kate Hudson, Matt Dillon, Owen Wilson and Michael Douglas, considered the University of Hawai'i medical school in Kaka'ako for a hospital-type lobby scene — which would give the facility its first closeup and movie debut. ...

Frank DeLima's latest tune might well be "On the Road Again," since he's heading for a couple of out-of-town gigs: Saturday at the California Hotel in Las Vegas, Nov. 11-12 at the Normandie Casino in Gardena, Calif.; and Nov. 19 at the Veterans Memorial Center in Redwood City, Calif. He's taking on some of his "friends," like Imelda Marcos. ...

FINALLY: Emma Veary, Ol' Golden Throat, will be backed by pianist-singer Randy Hongo in a benefit for Angel Network Charities at 7 p.m. Saturday at Calvary by the Sea Sanctuary. Tickets are $20, at Harry's Music or Native Book/Na Mea Hawai'i. ...

Al Waterson & You's karaoke competition is in the final stages at Don Ho's Island Grill, with youngsters ages 6 to 9 competing Sunday, the 10-11 kids Nov. 13, the 13-17 teens Nov. 20, adults Nov. 27 and seniors Dec. 4. Talk about equal opportunity! Hours are 6 to 9 p.m.; a $30 admission includes the show and buffet dinner.
