Ex-Warrior to be men's volleyball assistant

Former University of Hawai'i volleyball player Jason Salmeri will be named the men's team's new assistant coach.

Salmeri, who has been serving as a volunteer assistant coach during fall training, will replace consultant Carl McGown. McGown was hired as a temporary consultant for the fall semester. He will return to his home in Provo, Utah, after his contract runs out Dec. 7.

The position was vacated when Aaron Wilton resigned as coach in July to pursue a master's degree at Sacramento State.

Salmeri played at UH in 1997 and 1998. He has played professionally in Puerto Rico and Italy.

UH WOMEN UP TO NO. 9

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team moved up one spot to No. 9 in the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches poll, released yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine (17-6) won road matches against Fresno State and Nevada last week.

Nebraska (21-0) remained at No. 1 with 1,497 points and 57 first-place votes. Washington (20-0) stayed at No. 2 with 1,441 points and the other three first-place votes, and Penn State (21-2) was third with 1,381 points.

Hawai'i will next host Idaho in a Western Athletic Conference match Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

HPU REMAINS NO. 2

The Hawai'i Pacific women's volleyball team remained No. 2 in the CSTV/AVCA Division II Coaches' Poll, released yesterday.

The Sea Warriors (20-1) host Chaminade in Pacific West Conference matches tonight and tomorrow at Neal Blaisdell Arena.

Nebraska-Kearney (27-1) held the top spot with 873 points and 34 first-place votes.

HPU received 831 points and the other first-place vote.

Brigham Young-Hawai'i (18-3) remained No. 21 with 183 points.


GOLF

VULCANS IN FOURTH

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's golf team is fourth, eight strokes behind co-leaders Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus, after yesterday's first and second rounds of the Mauna Lani Intercollegiate at The Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island.

UH-Hilo's Kevin Shimomura shot a first-round low, 67, but fell into a tie for fourth after his second-round 75. Teammate Colin Gilliam is a stroke behind at 143 and tied for sixth.

Sonoma State's Kyle Hopkins leads with a 139.

In the women's competition, Chico State leads the Vulcans by two strokes after yesterday's first round. UH-Hilo's Jayna Shimomura is third with a 77.
