It's new, it's free, it's the first Hawai'i International Jazz Festival event in Kapolei, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Kapolei Hale, 1000 Uluohia St.

Why Kapolei?

Mayor Mufi Hannemann "has a long-range plan to develop cultural events for Kapolei residents," said organizer Abe Weinstein, who also mounts the bigger summertime staple, the Hawai'i International Jazz Festival, in Honolulu.

Why free?

Grants of $15,000 from the Campbell Estate and $10,000 from the city — sponsors of the event — make an admission-free policy possible.

Who's performing?

  • 11 a.m. — Schofield's 25th Infantry Division Lightning Swing Big Band.

  • Noon — Iolani School Stage Band III.

  • 1 p.m. — Schofield's 25th Infantry Division Lightning Jazz Ensemble.

  • 2 p.m. — Gypsy Pacific.

  • 3 p.m. — Kelly Covington Quartet.

  • 4 p.m. — Abe Weinstein and Friends.

  • 5 p.m. — Honolulu Jazz Quartet.

  • 6 p.m. — Bobby Thursby.

In addition, soloists Gabe Baltazar, Jeff Peterson, DeShannon Higa, Miles Jackson, Larry Cook, Aaron Aranita and Pete Factora will perform as part of the Weinstein "Friends."

Besides the jazz, the festival will have food booths, activities for children, and workshops and clinics at surrounding schools.

Weinstein is presenting the Kapolei program through the World Music Association, the parent company of the Hawai'i International Jazz Festival. Information: 941-9974 or www.hawaiijazz.com.
