TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"I Shouldn't Be Alive," 7 p.m., Discovery. Last week's opener offered a compelling re-enactment of a survival story. This one focuses on a powerful true story. James Stolpa was a 21-year-old Army private rushing to get to his ill grandmother and distraught mother. He took his wife and baby, and got stranded by a blizzard in the Nevada mountains. They tried a startling solution. It's a great story, told with interviews and re-creations.

"What I Like About You," 7 p.m., WB. The girls' judgmental dad (played by Barry Bostwick) is back from Japan. That should stir up some comedy. But when he left, in the show's pilot epi-sode, he was played by Peter Scolari and wasn't judgmental at all. Somehow, the trip made him five inches taller and changed his personality.

OF NOTE

"In the Heat of the Night" (1967), 5:45 p.m., AMC. Rod Steiger is the tough old Mississippi lawman; Sidney Poitier is the big-city police detective ordered to help him on a murder case. Steiger won an Oscar and the movie won for best picture.

"Ghost Whisperer," 7 p.m., CBS. A woman who died during pregnancy wants her husband to quit thinking it was his fault.

"The Bernie Mac Show," 7 p.m., Fox. To give his wife new power over the kids, Bernie hands her the belt that was used by his aunt.

"Hope & Faith," 8 p.m., ABC. When Hope needs a birthday present for her husband, she lets Faith pick it out. Faith picks a sexy shirt, which the husband loves and Hope hates.

"Masters of Horror," 8 p.m., Showtime. Last week's episode was totally gruesome. We'll see if this one is an improvement. "Dreams in the Witch-House" is based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft, with a college student facing terrifying nightmares.

"Numbers," 9 p.m., CBS. During a drill, a dangerous gas was released in the Los Angeles subway. Was it really a mistake?
