Fresno St. puts end to UH soccer season, 2-1

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team was bounced out of the Western Athletic Conference tournament yesterday by Fresno State, 2-1, at Boise, Idaho.

It was the fourth straight year the Rainbow Wahine (9-9-2) failed to win a WAC tournament match.

Antonea Lugo scored her first two goals of the season for Fresno State (8-9-2), which has beaten UH three straight times, including 1-0 in last week's regular-season finale.

Lugo's first goal gave Fresno State a 1-0 lead at 28:58. Her second came at 68:58.

Senior Natasha Kai scored Hawai'i's goal at 57:44.

Kai finished her career with 72 goals in 72 career matches.

"I thought we defended Kai very well today," Fresno State coach Steve Springthorpe said. "She was able to get the one goal but we did a good job of marking her on every opportunity."

UH senior Mahie Atay started in goal for an ill Kori Lu and recorded eight saves.

Note: UH senior defender Emily Rose was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII women's soccer second team. Rose, a senior from Petaluma, Calif., has played in 15 of UH's 19 games, with four starts. She maintains a 4.0 grade point average while majoring in meteorology with a minor in math.
