UH swim teams advance in Shootout

The University of Hawai'i men's team split a pair of dual meets, while the women's team won three and lost one yesterday at the Big West Shootout at Irvine, Calif.

The Rainbow Warriors beat UC Davis, 99-41, but fell to Brigham Young, 75-65.

Melanie Schlanger and Nicole Mackey each won three events lifting the Rainbow Wahine to a 3-1 record.

UH defeated UC Davis (101-39), Pepperdine (121-19), and Idaho (113-24), while losing to Stanford (80-59).

Both the Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine advanced to today's championship round.

SOUZA 19 SHOTS OFF PACE IN CHAMPIONS QUALIFIER

Hawai'i's Stan Souza shot a 3-over 75 and was 19 strokes behind the leader after three rounds of the Champions Tour regional qualifying tournament at Beaumont, Calif.

Souza has a 54-hole total of 223. Norm Jarvis is the leader at 68—204 heading into today's final round at the PGA at Southern California Golf Club.

The top qualifiers advance to the Champions Tour Q-School Final Nov. 16 to 21.

BYUH'S WENG EARNS PACWEST WEEKLY HONOR

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Yu Chuan Weng, who hammered a school-record 43 kills against Hawai'i-Hilo on Tuesday, has been named Pacific West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week.

The senior outside hitter became BYUH's career leader in kills that night with 1,626, surpassing the previous best of 1,615 of Arlette Silva (1996-99).
