In the hands of Hitomi Gilliam, flowers are transformed into abstract art. Her creations are often referred to as the "haute couture" of floral design.

The multi-award winning, internationally renowned floral designer and author/illustrator will be at the Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of Arts at 10 a.m. tomorrow. She will present a floral-arranging demonstration for The Garden Club of Honolulu.

Gilliam's presentation will be inspired by her new book, "ARTFLOR - Advanced Design + Process," due out this month.

"To paint with flowers, to sculpt with flowers, and to style 'haute couture' allows flowers to be seen and appreciated from new heights as a creative medium of expression," Gilliam said.

The Garden Club of Hono-lulu member Bertie Lee said, "Hitomi is really on the cutting edge of floral design. Not only are her designs extraordinary, but she is a fantastic teacher. She explains the process effortlessly as she creates her designs, interjecting historical references here and there. Both novices and pros will thoroughly enjoy her."

Gilliam has received numerous medals and awards, including the American Institute of Floral Designers' "Design Influence" award for individuals who have made a significant impact and influence with their signature design style. She is one of only five designers to have received this award.
