HAWAI'I BRIEFS
City sells $396M in general bonds

Advertiser Staff

The city sold $396 million worth of general obligation bonds this past week at an interest rate of 4.5 percent, one of the lowest rates the city has secured in recent years, officials said.

Local support for the offering was impressive, with retail orders totaling about $47 million, or approximately 12 percent of the bonds sold, they said.

"We are extremely gratified that local and institutional investors demonstrated such support for the city, allowing the city to continue to meet our financial objectives and secure low borrowing costs for taxpayers," Mayor Mufi Hannemann said Friday.

"This is part of our effort to get the city back on firm financial ground," Hannemann said.

UBS Financial Services Inc. served as the lead underwriter, with Merrill Lynch acting as co-manager on the tax-exempt bonds. Bond insurance was provided by FGIC Corp., the parent company of Financial Guaranty Insurance Co.
