POLICE BEAT
Woman arrested for driving stolen car

Advertiser Staff

A 42-year-old Waialua woman was arrested early yesterday morning while allegedly trying to return a stolen car to its rightful owner.

The home of a 64-year-old man, who owns the car, was burglarized on Nov. 3 while he was in Las Vegas, police said, noting that his car was one of the items taken.

The victim's wife got a phone call Monday from a woman who asked if one of her credit cards had been stolen and who said she had seen the stolen car earlier that night in Hale'iwa. A short time later, the man whose car was stolen got a call from the husband of the woman who reported seeing the car in Hale'iwa, police said. The male caller said he had located the car and wanted to meet the owner in Mililani to return it, but he asked the car owner to refrain from involving police.

At about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, shortly after the telephone calls, a woman driving the stolen car flagged down a police officer at the corner of Waialua Beach and Kaukonahua roads — about three miles from her home — and told the officer she wanted to return the car back to its owner.

The officer checked on the car's registration information, determined that it had been reported stolen and arrested the driver for unlawful control of a propelled vehicle and a prior warrant that was unrelated to the case.

Teen chased, arrested for car break-in

A 19-year-old Kapalama man was arrested early this morning after a witness reported seeing him steal a car stereo from a car parked on Vineyard Boulevard near Liliha Street.

Police responded to a call about 12:40 a.m. about a man breaking into a car and approached the man who was walking away.

Police said the suspect broke into a run and dropped a car stereo as they were chasing him. Police caught up with the suspect, who was identified at the scene by the witness. The car's registered owner was contacted and after checking his car, confirmed the stereo had been stolen and discovered the driver's side door lock had been damaged.

The suspect was then arrested and charges of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle were pending against him this morning.

A 49-year-old man was arrested last night for investigation of car theft after a witness reported seeing him driving around in a business parking lot in the Pearl City Industrial Park about 9:30 p.m. and looking into other vehicles. After the witness identified the suspect for police, a check on the car he was driving showed it had been reported as stolen.

Woman arrested in forged check incident

A 25-year-old Wahiawa woman was arrested yesterday for allegedly using a forged check to pay the rent to her landlord earlier this month.

A 27-year-old man, on whose account the check was drawn, discovered a discrepancy in his bank statement and filed a forgery complaint with police.

The landlord identified his tenant via a photographic lineup as the one who gave him the check, police said.

Police arrested the woman at the apartment for suspicion of second-degree forgery.

Bank stops woman from cashing unauthorized check

A 30-year-old Hawaii Kai woman was arrested yesterday for allegedly entering the unlocked car of a 26-year-old Hawaii Kai man two months ago and stealing several blank checks from his checkbook.

Police said an official from the man's bank contacted him Sept. 28 and asked if he had authorized the woman to cash one of his checks.

The account holder examined the checkbook he kept in his car and found several checks missing, police said.

The woman was identified as a suspect and was located and arrested yesterday for suspicion of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle.

The suspect turned himself in yesterday at police headquarters and was arrested for suspicion of second-degree assault.

Man arrested for fighting police officers

A 27-year-old man was arrested late Monday night in Hale'iwa after he allegedly attacked two police officers who had been sent to an area near the Surf-N-Sea store to break up a fight involving five people.

Police said one of the officers approached the suspect about 10:50 p.m. to gather information and to make the area safe when the man punched him in the face and kicked a second officer, who was coming to the aid of the first, in the leg.

The suspect was subdued and arrested for two counts of first-degree assault against a police officer.
