ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
‘Truly Dually’ musical brings home plight of homeless

Advertiser Staff

It's not exactly "Rent." But in playwright Michael Ullman's "Truly Dually: A New Musical About Homelessness," a handful of characters deal with actual homelessness on a daily basis. "Truly Dually" was inspired by Ullman's work with Honolulu's homeless population as director of programs with the Institute for Human Services. A free performance launches Homeless Awareness Week at 7 tonight at the State Capitol auditorium. (Park and enter the auditorium via the Capitol's underground garage.) 391-7963.

STEFANI'S ROCKIN' THE ISLANDS' BLING

Dance pop diva and fashion designer Gwen Stefani is spreading a little aloha. On her new "Luxurious" music video, she's wearing heavyweight Hawaiian heirloom bracelets created by Philip Rickard Honolulu. In addition, during September's New York Fashion Week, the runway models in Stefani's L.A.M.B. Spring 2006 fashion show sported the local company's creations. Here they are, as seen in People magazine. What grabs Stefani about Hawaiian jewelry? She loves Old English lettering and uses it in her media and designs.

FINAL WORD

"An actor can only be right for a part because of what's there inside him—although I'd hate to think that they cast me because I was a preening, doomed, melancholic, broken-down ghost haunting a ruin."
