Agbayani named MVP in Konami Cup

Associated Press

Hawaii's Benny Agbayani was named the Most Valuable Player after helping the Chiba Lotte Marines win the inaugural Konami Cup baseball tournament in Tokyo.

The tournament featured the top professional teams from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, plus a team of all-stars from the Chinese pro league.

Agbayani, a former Saint Louis School and Hawaii Pacific University athlete, had two homers, three runs scored and nine runs batted in in the series.

In the final, Chiba Lotte defeated South Korea's Samsung Lions, 5-3. Agbayani helped give the Marines a 3-1 lead in the third with a single. On Friday, Agbayani hit two homers and drove in four runs in Chiba Lotte's 12-1 victory over the Sinon Bulls of the Chinese Professional League.

Chiba Lotte is managed by Bobby Valentine, Agbayani's manager when both were with the New York Mets.

Last month, Valentine led the Marines to the Japan Series championship.
