Maui-born R. Kikuo Johnson, 24, graduated from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design just two years ago, and he's already making his mark.

His debut graphic novel, "Night Fisher" (Fantagraphics Books, $12.95), which is set on Maui, is getting rave reviews.

The magazine Giant Robot called it "a gritty coming-of-age story" with Johnson delivering "strong plot and dialogue like a fistful of poi."

Now based in Brooklyn, N.Y., Johnson is in Honolulu to sign his book:

  • 7 p.m. Thursday, Barnes & Noble in Kahala Mall.

  • 7 p.m. Friday, Barnes & Noble at Ala Moana Center.
