HPU advances, BYUH ousted in volleyball regional

Barbara Martin had 23 kills and Flavia Brakling added 16 to lead Hawai'i Pacific to a 30-27, 30-23, 23-30, 30-17 victory over Cal State Bakersfield today in the first round of the NCAA Division II women's volleyball tournament in Los Angeles.

The fourth-seeded Sea Warriors (24-2) face the winner of the Cal State Los Angeles-Seattle Pacific match in the semifinals of the Pacific Regional tomorrow. Cal State Los Angeles is the region's top seed.

Earlier today, Cal State San Bernardino eliminated Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 30-23, 30-25, 30-26, in the first game of the Pacific Regional.

Sixth-seeded BYUH finished its season at 20-5. Third-seeded Cal State San Bernardino improved to 20-7 and will play seventh-seeded Central Washington (23-4). Central Washington upset second-seeded Cal Poly Pomona (24-3), 28-30, 30-24, 23-30, 30-24, 16-14, today.

BYUH and HPU are members of the Pacific West Conference.
