Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's David Ishii triple bogeyed his fifth hole, then played the final 14 in even-par to shoot a 5-over-par 77 in the first round of the Champions Tour Q-School yesterday in Calimesa, Calif.

Ishii, 50, earned a place in the final Q-School because he won the 1990 Hawaiian Open. The Pearl Country Club Director of Golf plays on the Japan tour.

Barry Jaeckel shot 70 and was the only golfer to break par at the PGA Southern California Golf Club-Champions Course. Ishii shares 40th with 18 others, including former major league pitcher Rick Rhoden.

Steve Veriato, a former Champions Tour player from Hilo, shot 82 and is tied for 84th. Veriato double-bogeyed the 14th and didn't have any birdies.

After Saturday's fourth round, the field is cut to the low 70 and ties. The top seven finishers after 108 holes get playing cards for the 2006 season. The next eight receive conditional playing privileges.

SEKI CARDS 82 IN PGA SECOND STAGE QUALIFIER

The Punahou graduate is in 75th place. Steve Schneiter is in first after shooting 5-under-par 67 at the Bayonet Course.

IOLANI PITCHER MARCIEL SIGNS WITH JAYHAWKS

Iolani senior Wally Marciel signed a letter of intent yesterday morning to play baseball for the University of Kansas.

Marciel, a 6-foot, 210-pound left-handed pitcher, turned down offers from Hawai'i, Arizona, Arizona, Santa Clara, Brigham Young, St. Mary's and California.

"I visited (Kansas) and I liked what I saw," said Marciel, who also plays basketball at Iolani. "The Big 12 Conference is a good baseball conference, and they said I could be a starting pitcher."

Marciel was a first-team Interscholastic League of Honolulu selection last season as a utility player. He has been rated by some among the West Coast's top prospects.
