Suspected car thief hits officer

An attempted murder investigation was opened this morning after a police officer was injured while trying to arrest a man suspected of driving a stolen car in the Salt Lake area.

Police said the officer, 43, used his own subsidized Dodge Durango to force the suspected stolen car, a 1999 Lexus, toward the right side of Peltier Avenue close to where it intersects Salt Lake Boulevard about 1:45 a.m.

When the officer got out to approach the Lexus, the driver gunned the motor and struck the officer. The suspected stolen car wound up wedged between the officer's SUV and a guard rail. The driver got out and ran.

Police said he was still at large as of about 10 a.m.

The officer was taken to The Queen's Medical Center where he was treated for a deep cut on one of his legs and released.



Neighbor attacks couple with golf club

A McCully couple were injured last night after one of their neighbors attacked them with a golf club.

Police said a 36-year-old man and 38-year-old woman were leaving their apartment about 10:30 p.m. when they got into an argument with a neighbor fronting 1612 Dole St.

The neighbor, 38, went back into his apartment and returned with a golf club and attacked the couple, police said.

Police arrested the suspected assailant for suspicion of second-degree assault. The woman received minor injuries while man appeared to have a broken wrist.



Auto-theft ring arrests expected

Police yesterday arrested an 18-year-old Village Park man for suspicion of car theft and said the arrest of several other members of a suspected auto-theft ring are likely to follow.

The first of the suspected car thieves was arrested for suspicion of four counts of car theft about 12:15 p.m. yesterday, fronting an address on Mikalemi Street in 'Aiea.

Police said they believe the man is part of a theft ring preying on cars in the Halawa and 'Aiea areas. Police said several other suspects have been identified and their arrests are forthcoming.

Four car-theft charges against the first of the suspected auto-theft ring suspects are pending, police said.



Girl, 15, arrested for allegedly robbing classmates

A 15-year-old girl suspected of robbing four of her classmates at Farrington High School since Monday was arrested yesterday.

Police said the girl is suspected of robbing two girls yesterday, one on Wednesday and one on Monday.

The victims told police the suspect approached them, demanded money and used physical force to take it from them when they refused to hand it over.



Alleged sexual assault leads to Makiki man's arrest

A 22-year-old Makiki man was arrested yesterday for suspicion of six counts of first-degree sexual assault and three counts of third-degree sexual assault stemming from a relationship the man had with a 16-year-old O'ahu girl.

Police said the man met the girl in an internet chat room in 2002 and moved to Hawai'i in 2003 when he began having sex with the girl.



Student arrested for allegedly hitting teacher

A Waipahu Intermediate School student was arrested yesterday after she allegedly swatted a teacher in the back of the neck.

Police said the 12-year-old student approached the teacher, 43, from behind and hit her in the neck with an open hand. The girl was arrested for suspicion of second-degree assault. She was later released without charges pending further investigation.



Man, 70, allegedly threatens stepson with knife

A 70-year-old Kalihi man was arrested yesterday after he allegedly threatened his stepson with a large knife.

The stepson, 35, told police he was arguing with his stepfather about 8:45 a.m. when the older man grabbed the knife and threatened to kill him.

Other family members intervened and called police, who arrested the suspect for suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.
