Ishii tied for 34th in Champions Q-School

Hawai'i's David Ishii moved up six spots and is tied for 34th place after yesterday's second round of the Champions Tour National Qualifying Tournament at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif.

Ishii shot a 1-over-par 73 yesterday, with three birdies. His two-day total of 150 is seven back of leader Joe Naomichi Ozaki (69-143). Ozaki and Ishii play on the Japan tour.

Hilo's Steve Veriato (76-158) is tied for 84th in the 90-man field. The low 70 and ties, plus any who are within 10 shots of 15th place after four rounds advance to the final two rounds.

SEKI TIED FOR 74TH IN PGA SECONS QUALIFIER

Punahou graduate Jim Seki shot a 75 in yesterday's second round of the PGA Tour Qualifying School's Second Stage, in Seaside, Calif.

Seki is at 157 and shares 74th going into today's third round at Bayonet Golf Course. The leaders are at 4-under-par 140.

The low 19 and ties advance to the PGA Tour's final qualifying.


BASEBALL

ELDREDGE RESIGNS AS MARYKNOLL COACH

Maryknoll School is seeking a new varsity baseball coach and coordinator to replace Duane Eldredge.

Eldredge resigned "to spend more time with my family."

"My son is nine years old, that's part of it," he said. "I want to coach him a little bit more."

Eldredge has been with Maryknoll since 1998, the first year as an assistant and the last seven as the head coach.

VOLLEYBALL

U.S. WOMEN SWEEP CHINA, IMPROVE TO 2-0

Team USA, with Hawai'i setters Robyn Ah Mow and Lindsey Berg, improved to 2-0 in the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup by sweeping defending champion and 2004 Olympic gold medalist China on Wednesday at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

Nancy Metcalf scored a match-high 18 points and Tayyiba Haneef added 17 in the 25-22, 25-23, 26-24 victory. The Americans swept Korea Tuesday.

China, ranked No. 1 in the world to begin the tournament, won two previous meetings over the No. 5 Americans this season. China dropped to 0-2.

The U.S. team plays Poland (1-1) in Nagoya today, then takes on Brazil (2-0) tomorrow and Japan (1-1) Sunday.


TENNIS

UH'S HEINEMANN FALLS TO TOP-SEEDED ODESNIK

Top-seeded Wayne Odesnik ousted University of Hawai'i freshman Sascha Heinemann, 6-3, 6-0, yesterday in the round of 16 at the USTA's Honolulu Futures tournament main draw at the UH Tennis Complex.

Heinemann, a wild-card entry, broke Odesnik, ranked 290th in the world, twice in the first five games before losing the first set.

Odesnik then rolled through the second set after Heinemann was awarded a medical timeout for a leg injury.

The tournament continues today starting a 9 a.m. at the UH courts.

TOP SEEDS ADVANCE TO NIGHT DOUBLES SEMIS

The top-seeded team of Tetyana Bula and Yulia Ustyuzhanina advanced to the semifinals of the Women's Night Doubles with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Rie Yukihiro and Kalei Gora last night at the Kailua Racquet Club.

In another quarterfinal match, Guriana Korinihona and Petra Teller beat Chloe Bihag and Julie Sanborn, 6-0, 6-2.

In tonight's semifinals, Korinihona and Teller play second seeds Betsy Somerville and Laura Glitz at 6 p.m, while Bula and Ustyuzhanina face Mimi Kennell and Lauren Fitzgerald at 7:15.
