Four earn berths in stickfighting nationals

Four Hawai'i athletes qualified for the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation nationals in Milwaukee next February.

The federation is the international organization for the Filipino martial art of stickfighting.

The four were among 125 competitors at the Western Regionals Nov. 5 at Oxnard, Calif.

They are:

  • Ben Calimpong, gold medal, single stick middleweight

  • Robert Garcia, gold, double stick welterweight

  • Christopher Lopa, silver, single stick super-heavyweight

  • Siu Wai Tsang, silver, women open carenza (forms)

    Hawai'i's Kalani Chung earned a bronze medal in single stick in the lightweight division.

    Garcia is the chief instructor of the Bandalan Doce Pares Hawai'i branch and is a two-time world champion in single stickfighting. The others are students of Bandalan Doce Pares.

    The world championships are next July in Orlando, Fla.

    MORISHIMA TO RETIRE AFTER WORLD MEET

    Three-time world champion Ed Morishima Jr. said he will retire after the World Association of Bench Pressers and Deadlifters' World Bench Press Championships this weekend in Reno, Nev.

    Morishima, 43, is competing in the 198-pound open and masters divisions in the meet that ends Monday.

    Morishima said he would be attempting world records in both divisions. He holds multiple world records in the bench press.

    Last year, Morishima bench pressed 540 pounds to win the Masters (ages 40-46) division.
