Hawai'i golfer shoots for spot on Champions Tour

Hawai'i's David Ishii shot even-par 72 yesterday and moved into a four-way tie for 18th place after three rounds of the Champions Tour National Qualifying Tournament at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif.

Ishii, director of golf at Pearl Country Club, has a 54-hole total of 222 and is six back of leader Joe Naomichi Ozaki (73-216).

Hilo's Steve Veriato (73-231) is 64th. The cut for the final two rounds will be made today.

TWO SHARE OPEN LEAD

Hilo professional Ivan Cunningham and Honolulu pro Phil Chun shot 2-under 70s to share the lead after the first round of the Prince Resorts Hawai'i State Open at the Mauna Kea Resort golf course.

Amateur Kirk Smith from Waikoloa shot a 70 for a one-stroke lead in the senior flight, while Leilehua High senior Britney Choy topped the women's flight with a 77.

The flights will be cut in half after today's second round.

SEKI TIED FOR 73RD

Punahou graduate and former Pac-10 champion Jim Seki shot a third-round 73 at the PGA Tour Qualifying's Second Stage event yesterday at Seaside, Calif.

Seki shares 73rd place and, at 230, is 21 shots off the lead. The low 19 scores and ties after today's final round at Bayonet Golf Course advance to final qualifying.

GOLD FOR UH'S HUANG

University of Hawai'i All-American QiongJie Huang won the gold medal in the 1-meter springboard yesterday at the Indiana Collegiate Invitational at Bloomington, Ind.

Huang had 304.55 points to beat Indiana's Christina Loukas (295.655).


VOLLEYBALL

U.S. WOMEN SWEEP

Tayyiba Haneef scored a match-high 21 points as Team USA defeated Poland, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-19, in the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup at Nagoya Rainbow Hall in Tokyo. The Americans improved to 3-0.

The U.S. setters are Honolulu's Robyn Ah Mow and Lindsey Berg, who had six blocks and an ace. Former Rainbow Wahine Therese Crawford is a hitter.


TENNIS

ODESNICK GAINS SEMIS

No. 1 seed Wayne Odesnick defeated Tyler Cleveland, 7-5, 6-2. yesterday to advance to the semifinals of the of the USTA's Honolulu Futures Tournament at the UH Tennis Complex.

In other quarterfinals, No. 7 Jesse Witten beat No. 4 Brendan Evans, 7-6 (2), 7-5, Sam Querry beat Alex Reichel, 6-0, 6-2, and Alex Clayton ousted Sam Warburg, 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-2.

RAIN ON NIGHT DOUBLES

Last night's semifinals of the Women's Night Doubles at the Kailua Racquet Club was rained out.

Guriana Korinihona and Petra Teller led Betsy Somerville and Laura Glitz, 6-3, 2-1 when play was stopped. They will resume today at 4:30 p.m.

The other semifinal between Yulia Ustyuzhanina and Tetyana Bula against Mimi Kennell and Lauren Fitzgerald will be an 8-game pro-set format also starting at 4:30. The final will be at 7 p.m.
