Wie shoots 1-over 73 in Japan

Advertiser Staff

Michelle Wie, trying to become the first female to make a cut on the Japanese men's tour event, shot a 1-over-par 73 in the Casio World Open in Kochi, Japan Thursday.

Wie started on the 10th hole. She one-putted holes Nos. 10, 11 and 17. She three-putted hole No. 17 for her lone front-nine bogey, making the turn at 1-over 37. She bogeyed holes Nos. 3 and 4 to go 3-over, but rallied to birdie holes Nos. 6 and 7. On both her birdie holes, she one-putted.

Another Hawaii golfer, Gregory Meyer, shot a 1-under-par 71. Meyer is member of the Japan Tour. The early tournament-leader is Toshimitsu Izawa at 4-under, followed by Masashi Ozaki and Taichi Teshima at 3-under. With many golfers still to complete their rounds, Wie is among the top 40 or so players. The top 60 players and ties after Friday's second round make the cut for the final two days of competition.

The 16-year-old Punahou student is making her sixth attempt at trying to make the cut in a men's professional tournament. She has failed to make the cut in three PGA starts, a Nationwide event and a Canadian tournament.

Sophie Gustafson missed the cut in the 2003 Casio tournament, the only other time a female player has appeared in a top Japanese men's tour event.

The Japan Golf Tour and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
