Hawai'i's Sullivan wins Triple Crown of Surfing event

Hawai'i's Pancho Sullivan today won the OP Pro Hawai'i, the first jewel of the Triple Crown of Surfing, at Haleiwa Alii Beach.

Sullivan scored 17.23 points in the four-man final heat to complete a 12-year quest for a Triple Crown victory. He won $15,000.

Australia's Mick Fanning (15.90) placed second, followed by Brazil's Raoni Monteiro (13.43) and the United States' Brett Simpson (12.60).

The next men's event will be the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach. The holding period for that will be Friday through Dec. 6. The third event will be the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters at Ehukai Beach Dec. 8 to Dec. 20.

Australian Chelsea Georgeson won the first women's event, the Roxy Pro, Nov. 18, at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach Park. Upcoming women's events are O'Neill World Cup of Surfing Sunset Challenge at Sunset Beach from Nov. 25 to Dec. 6, and the Billabong Pro Maui at Honolua Bay, Maui, from Dec. 8 to Dec. 20.
