Southern Methodist senior forward Duke Hashimoto scored a goal and had an assist in a 3-0 win over UCLA yesterday in the second round of the NCAA Men's Division I Soccer Tournament.

Hashimoto (Iolani '02), helped SMU defeat San Francisco, 2-1, in Friday's first round.

Here's how other players from Hawai'i fared:

  • Santa Clara, with junior forward Keith DeVey (St. Anthony '02 of Kula), defeated Ohio State, 1-0, in Friday's first round. Santa Clara lost to California, 5-4, in penalty kicks in yesterday's second round after playing to a 0-0 tie.

  • Brown, with junior goalkeeper David Semenza (Punahou '03 of Honolulu), beat Rhode Island, 2-1 in overtime, in Saturday's first round. Brown lost to Maryland, 1-0, in the second round yesterday.

  • Dartmouth (10-2-6), with senior midfielder J.P. Barbosa (Punahou of Honolulu), lost to St. John's, 1-0, in the second round yesterday, after a first-round bye.

  • New Mexico, with sophomore midfielder David Gualdarama (Kamehameha '04), lost to Wis.-Milwaukee, 2-1, in the second round yesterday, after receiving a first-round bye.

    MORE MEN'S SOCCER

  • Three players from Hawai'i received all-West Coast Conference honorable mention honors: Santa Clara junior forward Keith DeVey (St. Anthony '02 of Kula), Gonzaga sophomore goalkeeper Vito Higgins (Academy of the Pacific '03 of Kailua), and Loyola Marymount sophomore defender Stephen Carlson (Punahou '04 of Honolulu).

    Higgins posted a 1.39 goals against average when starting games.

    DeVey led the team with six goals and four assists for 16 points.

    Carlson started 19 games, anchoring the Lions' defense.

  • Whitworth (Spokane, Wash.), with Hawai'i players Brent Murakami (sophomore midfielder, Mililani '04), Brett Kawaga (junior defender, Mililani '03) and Kenshiro Uki (sophomore midfielder, Pearl City '04), advanced to the NCAA Division III men's soccer championship finals in Greensboro, N.C.

    The Pirates (19-1-1) play Gustavus Adolphus (16-3-5) Friday in a semifinal.

  • Whittier College (Calif.) junior defender Jonathan Lee (Iolani of Kane'ohe) was named to the all-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second team.

    Also on Whittier's roster were senior goalkeeper Andy Khamoui (Punahou of Honolulu), junior defender Joe McFarland (Seabury Hall of Makawao) and sophomore midfielder Kody Seminara (ASSETS of Honolulu).

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

  • Westmont (Santa Barbara, Calif.) freshman forward Amy Lawson (Iolani '05 of Honolulu) scored in the 58th minute in a 3-2 win over Houghton College (N.Y.) on Saturday, as the team became the lowest seed to qualify for the semifinals at the NAIA Women's National Championship in Olathe, Kan.

    Lawson beat two defenders and fired at the far post for her 12th score of the season.

    Westmont lost to Martin Methodist (Tenn.) on penalty kicks, 4-3, after a 1-1 tie in regulation, in the semifinals Monday.

    Lawson scored both goals in a 2-0 win over defending national champion Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) in the second round Friday.

    She scored her first in the 49th minute on a header and her second in the 85th minute after a defensive steal 40 yards out.

    Azusa Pacific, also in the tournament, was eliminated in the quarterfinals, losing to Simon Fraser (B.C.), 2-1, Saturday. APU junior midfielder Jolie Nitta (Mililani '02) scored a goal in the 10th minute in a 3-0 win over Indiana Wesleyan in the "Sweet 16" round Thursday.

    WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • UC Irvine senior middle blocker Amanda Vazquez (Moanalua '02 of Honolulu) was named to the all-Big West first team.

    Vazquez, an honorable mention selection last year, is ranked among the Big West's top 10 in several categories. She is third in hitting percentage (.345), (4.55), fifth in kills (3.64) and ninth in blocks (1.00).

  • Hofstra (Hempstead, N.Y.) sophomore setter Shellane Ogoshi (Roosevelt '04 of Honolulu) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, in addition to earning CAA Setter of the Year honors.

    Ogoshi, also a first-team All-CAA selection, became the school's first conference player of the year since 2000.

    She led Hofstra with 1,097 assists (11.08 per game) and is second in digs with 411 (4.15 per game).

  • Menlo (Atherton, Calif.) sophomore Christa Hewett (Kamehameha '04 of Pearl City) was named the California Pacific Conference Libero of the Year.

    Senior setter Kari Shimomura (McKinley '02) was named to the first team and junior outside hitter Sanoe Eselu (Moanalua '03) was selected to the second team, along with Hewett.

    Courtney Adaro (Moanalua) was an honorable mention pick.

    Hewett led the Cal Pac with 421 digs. With 816 career digs, Hewett, after just two seasons, is Menlo's all-time leader.

    Shimomura finished the regular season second in total assists (446) and digs (280); fifth in assists per game (5.57), and digs per game (3.50).

    Eselu had 237 kills with a .224 hitting percentage.

    Adaro led the Cal Pac with 59 total blocks (24 solo, 35 assisted) and Menlo with 0.73 blocks per game.

    Holy Names (Oakland, Calif.) freshman middle blocker Miya Frank (Roosevelt '05) was an honorable mention pick, as were Pacific Union (Angwin, Calif.) senior libero Tara Higa ('Aiea '02) and Mills (Oakland, Calif.) freshman middle hitter/outside hitter Lokemele Davis (Hilo).

  • Several players from Hawai'i helped Taft College (Calif.) clinch its third consecutive Central Valley Conference volleyball title.

    Taft defeated Merced College, 22-30, 30-18, 22-30, 30-14, 15-10, on Friday.

    Sophomore middle blocker Paepaetele Poasa (Farrington) led the team with 22 kills, 23 digs and four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter/middle blocker Pikake Nutter-Gaudet (Leilehua) had a team-high 23 kills.

    Sophomore outside hitter Christie Haia (Sacred Hearts) had four blocks.

    Freshman setter Reyna Scudder (McKinley) had 18 digs and freshman setter Sachi Mamizuka (Kahuku) had 63 assists and three blocks.

    Also on the team are sophomore outside hitter Kaena Apana (Nanakuli), who injured her knee, and freshman outside hitter/middle blocker Maua Manuma (Radford).

    The playoffs for the community colleges in California begin Nov. 30.

  • Kansas Wesleyan freshman setter Doris Kometani (Kamehameha '05 of Kane'ohe) was named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year. Kometani, who was also named to the all-conference second team, averaged 9.41 assists per game, third in the conference.

  • Siena College (Loudonville, N.Y.) freshman libero Kathi Kobayashi (Punahou '05 of 'Aiea) helped the team advance to the NCAA tournament after capturing the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this past weekend.

    She had a team-high 20 digs as Siena defeated Fairfield, 29-31, 30-19, 27-30, 30-28, 15-11, for the championship Saturday.

    Fairfield (Conn.) sophomore middle/outside hitter Lindsey Lee (St. Joseph '04 of Hilo) had 13 kills and 16 digs, and sophomore outside hitter Jazmin Pa'akaula (St. Joseph '04 of Hilo) added 11 kills and 16 digs, and freshman setter Brandi Higa (Hawai'i Baptist '05 of Honolulu) added 14 digs.

    Kobayashi had 12 digs as Siena beat Iona, 28-30, 30-21, 30-19, 25-30, 15-10, on Friday in the semifinals.

    Earlier last week, Lee was named to the all-MAAC second team, and junior libero Kiana Kauwe (Kamehameha) was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team.

  • College of Southern Idaho freshman outside hitter/setter Aneli Cubi-Otineru (Punahou '05) was named the MVP of the Region 18a Tournament.

    She had a match-high 24 kills to go with 20 assists and 15 digs in a 30-20, 22-30, 30-25, 20-19 win over No. 4 North Idaho College on Nov. 12.

    Cubi-Otineru was named to the all-Region 18 of the Scenic West Athletic Conference first team. North Idaho freshman outside hitter Konae Purcell ('Aiea '05) was named to the second team.

    She finished seventh in the SWAC for kills with 214.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Washington University (St. Louis) freshman guard Shanna-Lei Dacanay (Punahou '05) scored six of her 10 points in the second half in an 80-44 win over Coe College Friday night.

  • Menlo (Calif.) sophomore guard Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04 of Honolulu) was named the California Pacific Conference Player of the Week.

    She had 16 points and seven assists in Menlo's 75-56 victory against La Verne Friday, and scored a game-high 12 points in a 90-45 victory at Pomona-Pitzer Saturday.

    Senior guard Shannon Riley (Maryknoll '02) had a game-high 17 points in Friday's game and added nine points Saturday night with a game-high seven assists.

  • Three California Lutheran players from Hawai'i are returning home to play in the D3 in Hawai'i Hoops Classic this weekend at Kamehameha: Junior guard Tiffany Shim (Kamehameha '03), junior forward Caroline Beddow (Mid-Pacific '03) and freshman guard Cheryl Lee (Maryknoll '05).

    Other participants include George Fox, La Verne and Marian College of the Fond Du Lac (Wis.).

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Brigham Young junior guard Rashaun Broadus (Mililani '02) scored nine points and dished out three assists in an 83-71 loss to Loyola Marymount Friday.

  • Colorado School of Mines (Golden, Colo.) freshman guard Kyle Pape (Iolani '05) scored four points, and added two assists, three steals and five rebounds in an upset of No. 24 Pittsburgh State, 52-39, Saturday.

    FOOTBALL

  • Linfield (McMinvillle, Ore.) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs after beating Occidental (Los Angeles), 63-21, Saturday.

    Senior defensive end Brandon Tom (Kamehameha of Kailua) had four tackles, and junior defensive end Nik Soo (Kamehameha of Kamuela), freshman defensive tackle Ian Estrada (Kamehameha from Kailua), and senior cornerback Saffery Silva (Moanalua of Kane'ohe) had one tackle each.

    Oxy senior safety Derek Turbin (Punahou '02) had 11 tackles, including 10 solo.

  • Grossmont College (El Cajon, Calif.) freshman outside linebacker Derek Hinkley (Punahou '04 of Kane'ohe) had four tackles in a 42-10 win over Glendale College Saturday in the Southern California Bowl. Grossmont advanced to the next round of the California Junior College Championships.

  • San Diego junior center Kaea Simeona (Kamehameha '02) helped the team win the Pioneer Football League Championship.

    SWIMMING

  • Stanford junior Hongzhe Sun (Iolani '03) was named the Male Most Outstanding Athlete of the UCI Speedo Cup this past weekend.

    He set a Speedo Cup record in the 200 back with an NCAA "A" time of 1:42.82. On Thursday, Sun had an "A" qualifying time in the 200 IM with his time of 1:46.08. A day later, Sun produced an "A" qualifying time of 47.29 in the 100 back.

    Stanford sophomore Noa Sakamoto (Punahou '04) was fourth in the 200 butterfly (1:50.17) and 25th in the 1,650 (15:49.48).

    San Diego senior Ashley Swart (Kaiser '02 of Hawai'i Kai) was second in the 400 IM (4:18.44) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:52.04) and 200 breaststroke (2:18.29).

    Air Force freshman Bryan Avery (Mililani) was 13th in the 200 freestyle (1:43.34) and 1,650 freestyle (16:42.87) and 22nd in the 500 freestyle (4:49.37).

    UC Irvine sophomore Randall Tom (Seabury Hall '04 of Wailuku) was second in the 100 butterfly (49.48) and ninth in the 200 IM (1:51.57).

    Air Force freshman Kai Yamashiro (Iolani of Kane'ohe) was 15th in the 200 backstroke (1:54.02) and 26th in the 100 butterfly (53.03).

    UC Irvine sophomore Chelsea Nagata (Maui '04 of Kahului) was fourth in the 100 backstroke (57.04), fifth in the 100 butterfly (56.39) and seventh in the 50 freestyle (24.03)

    Pepperdine senior Nicole Okuna (Waiakea) was eighth in the 100 butterfly (58.14).

    San Diego senior Ashley Rose (Kealakehe '02 of Kailua, Kona) was 20th in the 200 backstroke (2:09.01) and 24th in the 100 backstroke (1:00.09).

    Nevada sophomore Megan Rose (Kealakehe of Kailua, Kona) was 16th in the 100 backstroke (59.15) and 17th in the 200 backstroke (2:05.61).

    Air Force senior Carly Omizo (Iolani of Kailua) was ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.84) and 11th in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.02).

  • Several swimmers from Hawai'i fared well at the Washington University Invitational at St. Louis, this past weekend.

    Junior Erin Nakamoto (Kalani '03) won the 100 backstroke (1:03.18) and was third in the 50 freestyle (25.83) and 200 backstroke (2:17.35).

    Sophomore Jon Lau (Iolani '04) won the 100 butterfly (52.57) and 200 butterfly (1:57.90), and was fourth in the 200 IM (2:04.44) and 400 IM (4:33.01).

    Sophomore Amanda Chun (Iolani '04) was 12th in the 100 butterfly (1:06.47), 200 IM (2:26.50) and 100 freestyle (1:00.54), and 16th in the 200 freestyle (2:11.71).

  • San Diego senior Ashley Swart (Kaiser '02 of Hawai'i Kai) was named the Western Athletic Conference women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week on Nov. 7.

    She had five first-place finishes at the Big West Shootout in Irvine, Calif.

    Swart won the 200 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley on the first day. She had a time of 1:51.70 in the 200 free, 2:16.77 in the breast and 4:20.66 in the 400 IM. She also grabbed gold in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.65 and 200 breaststroke in 2:17.44, both on day two.

    WOMEN'S GOLF

  • Yale sophomore Lindsay Hong (Punahou '04 of Honolulu) tied for 12th place at the Ross Resorts Invitational, at the par-71, 6139-yard Pine Needles Lodge in Southern Pines, N.C., on Nov. 1. Hong shot 79-77-73—229.

    WATER POLO

  • Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.) junior utility Tim Brown (Iolani '03 of Kane'ohe) was named to the all-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team.
