Maryland overwhelms ’Swords in second half

 •  No. 8 Gonzaga outlasts Michigan State in 3 OTs

Associated Press

LAHAINA, Maui — Chris McCray scored 17 points — nine in a 23-0 run in the second half — to lead No. 23 Maryland over Chaminade, 98-69, in the consolation round yesterday of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

The Terrapins (2-1), who lost 88-76 to No. 8 Gonzaga in the opening round, will play Arkansas for fifth place today.

Chaminade (0-2), the Division II host school of the eight-team tournament, brought back memories of its famed win over another Atlantic Coast Conference school in taking an 11-point lead in the first half. The Silverswords, then an NAIA school, stunned No. 1 Virginia and Ralph Sampson in December 1982.

James Gist and Nik Caner-Medley added 16 points apiece for Maryland.

Chris Reaves had 13 points for the Silverswords.

ARKANSAS 65, KANSAS 64

Dontell Jefferson hit a jumper with 16 seconds left to give Arkansas (2-1) the lead and the Razorbacks blocked two 3-point attempts in the final 3 seconds to beat Kansas in the consolation round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Kansas (1-2) called a timeout with 12 seconds left and Arkansas called one as well before the ball was inbounded. The Jayhawks worked the ball to the corner where Jeff Hawkins' 3-point attempt was blocked out of bounds by Jefferson with 2.5 seconds left. Russell Robinson got off the Jayhawks' final attempt at a win just before the buzzer but Steven Hill blocked that one out of the bounds.
