A season of thanks, and a season of need

 •  ‘Lord, behold our family here assembled ... ’
 •  From the heart, the meaning of Thanksgiving
 •  Our readers respond generously

This year there's been no shortage of calamities that left millions in dire need. The Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami brought stunning devastation, and, thankfully, an outpouring of aid. And hurricanes Katrina and Rita reminded us that we are also vulnerable. Again, the world responded with contributions toward various relief efforts.

Signs of "charity fatigue" became clearly evident when the Asian earthquake left the world reeling. Locally, that fatigue can be charted in a slowdown of contributions to nonprofits, a sad development as these charities work to help Hawai'i families.

This year, The Advertiser has launched its annual Christmas Fund drive with the hope that, despite the tragedies of the past year, the well of aloha has not run dry.

The holiday season — a time of joy and thanksgiving — is also a time for sharing. Let's all celebrate what we cherish most — and expand that celebration in generosity to those who have less.
