UH dishes out zaniness, HTY serves up yule tradition

A wacky musical favorite and a holiday tradition take the spotlight in the next several days.
'LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS'
A love story, a menacing creature from outer space, a bit of violence and lots of music.
That's the recipe for "Little Shop of Horrors," Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's cult musical based on the Roger Corman cult film of the same name.
It's the tale of hapless flower-shop employee Seymour, who loves the sweet and lovely Audrey (alas, she belongs to another!). Enter a very strange plant that changes Seymour's life for the better and worse. Memorable songs from the musical include "Suddenly Seymour," "Somewhere That's Green," "Skid Row" and "Little Shop of Horrors."
"Little Shop" is directed by Jennifer Linstad, an MFA directing candidate at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa.
Showtimes are 8 p.m. Wednesday through Dec. 3 and 2 p.m. Dec. 4 at UH's Earle Ernst Lab Theatre. There's a postshow rap session Dec. 2, too.

'CHRISTMAS TALK STORY'
Nine stories comprise "Christmas Talk Story," Honolulu Theatre for Youth's annual stage tradition that looks at the holidays from children's perspectives.
The stories were written by Iolani School juniors Megan Chock and Sara Wynhoff and "Talk Story" veterans Sean T.C. O'Malley, Rochelle DelaCruz, Yokanaan Kearns, Diane Aoki, Linda Tagawa, Daryl Bonilla and Lee Tonouchi.

"Christmas Talk Story" premieres at 7:30 p.m. today, repeating at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays and 4:30 p.m. Sundays, through Dec. 18, at Tenney Theatre.
Tickets are $16 general, $8 children.
