Randolyn "Hoku" Nohara, a Kamehameha Schools junior, broke her own world record, bench pressing 314 pounds in the women's open division at a bench press competition last week in Reno, Nev.

Nohara, competing in the 198-pound class, set a record of 292 pounds last year at the same meet — the World Association of Benchpressers and Deadlifters Championships, also held in Reno.

Last week in the championships at the Reno Hilton, she was named best lifter in the women's open division.

This was the third year Nohara, 16, competed at the world championships, her second in the open division.

Nohara is a two-time state high school wrestling champion for the Warriors.

RELL SUNN MENEHUNE CONTEST START TODAY

More than 200 boys and girls under the age of 12 are expected to compete in the 30th annual Rell Sunn Menehune Surfing Championships today through Sunday at Makaha Beach.

The meet is scheduled for 8 a.m. each day. The alternate site is Wai'anae Army Recreation Center (Rest Camp).

Events include bodyboarding, shortboarding and longboarding in six age divisions. Late entries will be taken at the beach if space is available.

Many of Hawai'i's professional surfers competed in Sunn's contest when they were keiki, and several donate prizes and their time to the event, according to organizers.

Sunn, a champion surfer known as the Queen of Makaha, died at age 47 in 1998 after a 14-year battle with breast cancer.
