Kahuku, Punahou reach Division I football final

Quarterback Brett Kan scored on a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs in the second half to lead No. 2 Punahou over No. 3 Baldwin, 30-7, in a semifinal of the First Hawaiian Bank Division I state football tournament tonight before 9,629 at Aloha Stadium.

Punahou (11-2) will play No. 1 Kahuku (10-1) at 8 p.m. Friday for the championship. Kahuku defeated Wai'anae, 43-0, in the other semifinal.

The Red Raiders won state titles in 2000, 2001 and 2003. This is the Buffanblu's first trip to the state final.

Baldwin (11-1) ends its season tying a school record for wins, matching the 1999 team (11-2).

The Buffanblu snapped the deadlock in the third quarter, when the ran the ball 11 times in the 12-play drive covering 40 yards with Kan sneaking in from the 1 to make it 14-7 with 1:50 left in the third quarter.

Punahou added to its lead early in the fourth quarter. After punter Dane Fernandez mishandled a snap for a 22-yard loss to the Bears 19, the Buffanblu scored again on a 1-yard sneak by Kan to cap a five-play,19-yard drive to make it 21-7.

The Buffanblu scored again on a 5-yard TD run by Kainoa Carlson with 9:13 left.

Later, Moniz was called for intentional grounding in the end zone for a safety for Punahou to make it 30-7.

Kahuku 43, Wai'anae 0: Kahuku rushed for 320 yards and threw for 99 more despite a running clock in the fourth quarter because of the 35-point rule.

The Red Raider defense was just as impressive, limiting Wai'anae (9-4) to 97 total yards, including just 34 on the ground.
