Missing hiker rescued

Advertiser Staff

A 58-year-old woman who had been missing since Thanksgiving Day was found alive about 12:20 p.m. today by rescue workers who had searched for her for the past three days.

A city paramedic team was en route to Hau'ula Elementary School to treat Barbara Whaley for possible environmental exposure. No reports on Whaley's condition were immediately available.

Whaley was last seen on Hau'ula Loop Trail after telling family members she intended to hike into the mountains to pray. Whaley had arrived on the island from Oregon on Sept. 12 with her daughter, grandchildren, son-in-law and his mother. Officials had said earlier that she is bipolar and suffers from ailments that include a heart condition and diabetes.
