Apple iPods make great gifts, but accessories for the music players also are good gift ideas to consider for folks who already own one of the 28 million iPods sold since they were introduced in 2001.

More than 1,000 add-ons are available. Most are compatible with third- and fourth-generation iPods and the now-defunct, but best-selling, iPod Mini. A healthy supply of iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano extras also will line store shelves this holiday season, but accessories for the new, fifth-generation video iPods are just starting to appear.

Some iPod extras cost as much as the music players themselves (or more), while others make affordable stocking stuffers. With inexpensive options such as the $29 Apple iPod Socks (www. apple.com), designed to protect your player and available in six vibrant colors, you don't have to break the bank to buy a gift for the iPod lover in your life.

Here are our top iPod accessory picks organized from least expensive to most expensive:

GRIFFIN ITRIP

Enjoy your favorite iPod songs and podcasts in your car with the redesigned Griffin iTrip. It's a tiny FM transmitter that lets you play your iPod's audio through any FM radio — wirelessly. Compared with similar products, the iTrip, which works with all iPods, offers a clear signal and LCD screen to easily find an open FM frequency. The iTrip does not require batteries because it receives its power from the iPod itself. An iPod Nano version is also available. $19.99 to $49.99; www.griffintechnolo gy.com.

RADTECH ICE CREME V.2

OK, so it's not the sexiest iPod accessory, but should someone on your gift list have a scratched iPod, the RadTech Ice Creme v.2 can remove surface abrasions and scuffs on plastic and plated-metal surfaces. The cleaning kit includes a powerful liquid solution and polishing cloths, and is designed for all iPods and other high-tech products such as personal digital assistants, portable gaming systems and laptops. $25.95; www.radtech.us.

INCASE AND ISKIN CASES

Protect your iPod in style. Cases and sleeves make perfect stocking stuffers. They include the iSkin eVo2 ($29.99; www.iskin .com), a flexible and stretchable silicone "skin" that cozily pulls over your iPod's body and is available in nine colors (and some glow in the dark). The iSkin Duo for iPod Nano ($29.99) is also available. If leather is more your thing, InCase (www.goincase .com) has a number of product lines worth slipping into, such as the cute and colorful Dinopods cases ($30) and the retro Analog case collection ($30) with turntable, boombox and cassette deck graphics.

APPLE UNIVERSAL IPOD DOCK WITH APPLE REMOTE

Simplify the way you connect your iPod to a computer. Rather than fumbling behind your computer to connect the iPod's cable to an available port, simply drop the device into this docking station to sync the player with iTunes — and recharge it at the same time. This elegant solution also has a line-out port to connect the dock to a set of speakers and an S-Video out port to view photos or videos on a television. You also can control your media from across the room using the optional wireless Apple Remote ($29). Works with all iPod models except the iPod Shuffle. $39; www.apple.com.

IHOME IH5 CLOCK RADIO

Consider it a perfect bedside companion for iPod lovers. The iHome iH5 Clock Radio lets you dock your player in a snug cradle on top of the unit that not only recharges your iPod's battery but also lets you listen to music, podcasts and audio books via its clean-sounding stereo speakers. Or you can set the alarm to play your favorite song. The white clock radio, which ships with connectors to fit all iPod models, also features an AM/FM tuner, snooze bar and backlit screen. Too bad the wireless remote ($19.99) isn't included. $99.95; www.ihomeaudio.com.

LOGITECH WIRELESS HEADPHONES FOR IPOD

If you're tired of being tethered to an iPod via wired headphones, disconnect with wireless headphones from Logitech. Snap the Bluetooth receiver on the top of the iPod for pure digital audio as far as 30 feet away. Controls for selecting tracks and adjusting your iPod's volume are discreetly integrated into one of the earphones. Built-in batteries provide eight hours of playback. $149.99; www.logitech.com.

IDJ MIXING CONSOLE FOR IPOD

Mobile disc jockeys and serious party planners can lighten their load with this two-channel mixer that holds two iPods for hundreds of hours of music and mixing. Supporting all model iPods with a dock connector (and recharging them while docked), this mixer features large iPod control buttons, a three-band equalizer (with gain control for both channels), fader, microphone input and additional line inputs for extra devices. Record your mixes to a computer with the USB connector. $249; www.numark.com.

KENPO JACKET FOR IPOD

The Kenpo Jacket for iPod fuses fashion with functionality as music lovers can keep their iPod in the jacket's inner pocket yet still be able to play, pause, select tracks and adjust volume with an intuitive fabric touchpad interface on the lower portion of the jacket's left sleeve. The men's jacket doesn't require any batteries and is compatible with all iPod and iPod Mini models. Available in four styles. $275; www.kenpofashion.com.

OREGON SCIENTIFIC IBALL WIRELESS SPEAKER SYSTEM

Have a "ball" with this clever home stereo designed for your iPod. Dock your player into the iBall base and your tunes will be wirelessly transmitted to a round, three-speaker system up to 100 feet away. The 8-inch iBall, which operates on a rechargeable battery or AC adapter (both included), includes remote functions (to change tracks on the iPod wirelessly) and an illuminated screen to see information such as time and volume. You also can recharge your iPod and sync it with your computer from the iBall base. The system is compatible with all iPod models, but a separate iPod Shuffle adapter is sold separately. $299.99; www.ore gonscientific.com.

SHURE E4C SOUND ISOLATING EARPHONES

There are earbuds and then there are Shure E4c earbuds. This award-winning product (including a top "Innovations" nod at the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show) is an ultralight (1 ounce) professional-grade set of earbuds designed for mobile audiophiles. Its high-definition driver delivers crisp highs, deep bass and full midrange audio, so iPod users will feel like they've brought their home theater with them on the go. The E4c earbuds, which also work to block out ambient noise, ship with a carrying case, volume-level control and multiple foam, flange and flex sleeves for a personalized fit. $299; www.shure .com
