STATE GIVES $300K TO SEAGULL SCHOOLS

The state has made a $300,000 grant to Seagull Schools to help it build two portable preschool classrooms at Maunawili Elementary School. The release of the money supports programs that enhance early childhood education opportunities, Gov. Linda Lingle said.

When completed, the two childcare rooms will provide care and early education for 40 preschool-age children, and employment for four to five people. About half of the children will be from low- and moderate-income families from Waimanalo.

The total project cost is $400,000. The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation has provided a $100,000 matching grant. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2006 and finish in summer 2006.

FIRE REMINDER ON CHRISTMAS TREES

The Honolulu Fire Department is reminding residents that Christmas trees placed in areas accessible to the public must be treated with a fire retardant.

However, fire officials may waive the requirement if certain provisions are followed for freshly cut trees. They include:

  • A proper support device is used, one capable of holding a two-day minimum supply of water.

  • The trunk has a fresh butt cut on a diagonal at least 1 inch above the original cut.

  • The water level is kept above the butt of the tree.

  • Trees are checked daily for dryness by grasping the branch firmly and allowing the branch to slip through the grasp. If the needles fall off readily, the tree does not have adequate moisture and needs to be removed.

  • Candles and open flames should not be used on a tree or within a distance equal to the height of the tree.

  • Electrical decorations must be UL (Underwriters Laboratories) listed.

For more information, call the department's Fire Prevention Bureau at 831-7764.
