Man killed in moped accident identified

Advertiser Staff

A 42-year-old Honolulu man was fatally injured last night when the moped he was riding collided with a car on Lanikuhana Avenue in Mililani near the Wal-Mart store.

The city Department of the Medical Examiner identified the man as Valentino Paglinawan.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said Paglinawan was heading south on Lanikuhana Avenue when a 1990 Accura Integra headed north on Lanikuhana turned left in front of the moped at Makaimoimo Street about 10:20 p.m.

Paglinawan, who was not wearing a helmet, broadsided the Accura, flew up and over the hood and came to rest on the pavement, traffic investigators said.

He was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital in critical condition with severe head injuries and died there at 12:07 a.m. today, police said.

The 18-year-old Wahiawa man driving the Accura was not injured. Investigators do not believe the Accura driver was speeding or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Speeding by the moped operator may have been a contributing factor in the crash, police said. It had not been determined if Paglinawan was operating it under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Paglinawan's death was the 70th traffic fatality on O'ahu so far this year, compared with 60 for the same period last year.

Eight of the traffic fatalities this year have been moped riders. Before last night, the most recent moped fatality occurred July 10 on Hakimo Road in Wai'anae near Ulehawa Street.
