BUSINESS BRIEFS
Horizon Lines seeks rate hike

Advertiser Staff

Horizon Lines said today it will file a request with the federal Surface Transportation Board to raise its ocean freight rates for the company's Hawai'i service effective Jan. 2.

The amount of increase Horizon is seeking varies depending on a number of factors, including direction and mode of transport. Horizon said higher rates are needed to cover increased barge and inland expenses, contractual labor costs, and increased capital spending to upgrade the company's container fleet and terminals.

Westbound rates for shipments originating on the Mainland from either port terminals or inland points served by truck will increase by $125 per container. Rates for shipments originating on the Mainland from inland points served by rail will increase by $385 per container.

Eastbound rates for shipments originating in Hawai'i to either Mainland port terminals of inland points served by truck will increase by $75 per container. Rates for shipments originating in Hawai'i to inland points served by rail will increase by $335 per container.

Hawaiian Air offers hotel flight check-in

Hawaiian Airlines passengers can now check in for flights at four Outrigger and Ohana hotels in Waikiki before leaving for the airport.

Hawaiian's "Hele On" self-service kiosks allow travelers to check in luggage, print out boarding passes, change their flight or seat location and upgrade to first class if available. Fees for excess or overweight baggage are also handled online.

"Hawaiian and Outrigger share a commitment to offering travelers hassle-free service, so this is a natural partnership," said Blaine Miyasato, Hawaiian's vice president of customer services. "With Outrigger, we have essentially covered the four corners of Waikiki to serve their guests and anyone else in the district flying on Hawaiian."

The lobby kiosks are at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach, Outrigger Reef on the Beach, Ohana East and the Ohana Maile Sky Court. For Web check-in passengers, scanning boarding passes and dropping off luggage at the Honolulu International Airport will take a minute or less, Hawaiian said.
