TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Invasion," 7 p.m., ABC. This is catch-up night on two networks. New-season shows are rerun in case we missed them. That's topped by "Invasion," the year's best new show. Its terrific pilot is combined with the second episode to sort of make a movie. In the first hour, a fierce hurricane hammers a fictional version of Homestead, Fla. We soon meet some well-etched characters. Russell Varon (Eddie Cibrian) is a park ranger married to TV reporter Larkin Groves (Lisa Sheridan). Staying with them is her brother, Dave (Tyler Labine), who suspects that aliens are invading. Russell's ex-wife, Dr. Mariel Underlay (Kari Matchett), is married to Sheriff Tom Underlay (William Fichtner). She's had two kids, Rose and Jesse, with Russell; the sheriff has a teen daughter, Kira. By the end of the first hour, Homestead is trying to recover, the doctor is acting strangely and Rose says she saw lights. Dave is getting excited and so are we.

OF NOTE

"Endurance: Tehachapi" debut, 4:30 p.m., NBC. "Endurance" is a "Survivor" copy for kids. This edition has gorgeous landscapes (apparently the Tehachapi mountains east of Bakersfield, Calif.) and lots of kids cute enough to be on WB. Unfortunately, it starts with a contest seeing how long they can hold on before their arms ache so much they fall. Torture TV seems especially cruel to kids.

"Surface," 7 and 8 p.m., NBC. After planning to rerun the terrific pilots of "My Name is Earl" and "E-Ring" tonight, NBC downgraded. It's rerunning the first two episodes of this so-so series. An oceanographer (Lake Bell) is convinced there's something creepy in the water and she soon runs into government interference. Meanwhile, a teen (Carter Jenkins) has snatched a creature from the water. He learns it's not good company at a party.

"CSI: Miami," 7 p.m., CBS. In a rerun, a jet has crashed with a fortune in checks. Cops soon learn about a dead woman onboard.

"Cold Case," 8 p.m., CBS. This rerun has a new murder that's similar to one that happened earlier at a prep school, where a girl was taunted by her peers.

"Commander in Chief," 9 p.m., ABC. This reruns Tuesday's opener in which an independent vice president (Geena Davis) is thrust into the presidency. The opener spends too much time having her be indecisive about taking the job; none of us thought she wouldn't. Beyond that, however, it's a good start.

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," 9 p.m., NBC. Here's a rerun of an intense episode. Matthew Modine plays a suspected child-killer who was freed last time. Now Stabler tries to control his own rage during an interrogation.

"Saturday Night Live," 10:30 p.m., NBC. "SNL" kicks off its 31st season on the air with Steve Carell ("The Office" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin") hosting. Kanye West is the musical guest.
