Louisiana Tech wins WAC opener, 34-14

Matt Kubik threw for 174 yards and two touchdowns to lead Louisiana Tech to a 34-14 win over visiting New Mexico State at Ruston, La., last night in the Aggies' first game in the Western Athletic Conference.

The Aggies (0-5) joined the WAC earlier this year after leaving the Sun Belt Conference.

Tech (1-2) jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead and New Mexico State didn't score until there was just 1:05 left in the game. The Aggies recovered the ball after an onside kick and running back Jeremiah Williams carried it in from nine yards away. Backup quarterback Royal Gill hurled a 21-yard touchdown pass to wideout A.J. Harris with 19 seconds remaining.

Kubik, who went 12 for 28, connected with tight end Anthony Harrison for both of his touchdown passes. The two combined for a 3-yard scoring pass in the first half and an 8-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to give the Bulldogs a 31-0 advantage.

Tech's defense forced the Aggies into six turnovers. Tramon Williams grab two interceptions, while Alton Bryant and Delone Williams had one interception each. Robert Burrell and lineman Josh Muse both recovered fumbles.

Hawai'i travels to Louisiana Tech on Saturday and hosts New Mexico State on Oct. 15.

Idaho 27, Utah State 13: Linebacker Mike Anderson returned an interception 71 yards for a touchdown with 45 seconds to play, securing Idaho's first WAC win of the season. Quarterback Steven Wichman completed his first 13 passes and finished 20 for 25 for 238 yards and a touchdown for the Vandals (1-4, 1-1). Hawai'i defeated Idaho, 24-0, on Sept. 24. The Warriors host Utah State (1-2, 0-1) on Nov. 12.

Nevada 30, San Jose St. 23: Jeff Rowe passed for 226 yards and two touchdowns, including the tiebreaker with 3:39 left, leading visiting Nevada (2-2, 1-0 WAC) to a victory over San Jose State (1-3, 0-1). Nevada got its first road win since a 28-21 victory at Tulsa on October 18, 2003. UH plays at San Jose State on Oct. 22 and at Nevada on Nov. 5.

San Diego StaTe 31, Brigham Young 10: San Diego State quarterback Kevin O'Connell completed his first 12 passes and ran for a touchdown to lead the Aztecs (2-3, 1-1 Mountain West) to a win over Brigham Young (1-3, 0-2). San Diego State plays at Hawai' on Dec. 3.
