HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Man shot self in head, police say

Advertiser Staff

A man was hospitalized after shooting himself in the head early yesterday morning at the end of a standoff at a hotel near Honolulu International Airport, police said.

The 51-year-old man was listed in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center.

During the 10-hour standoff, the man fired a couple of shots from a .38-caliber handgun out the window of his 11th-floor room at the Best Western Plaza Hotel on Nimitz Highway, police said. That led police to shut down a nearby stretch of H-1 Freeway, and the hotel was evacuated.

The man shot himself about 4:30 a.m. after officers forced their way into his room and repeatedly ordered him to surrender, Capt. Frank Fujii said.

His wife had reported him missing, and a tip led officers to the hotel Saturday evening, police said.

"At that time he had a gun pointed to his head, and was threatening to kill himself," Maj. Susan Ballard said.

The man was suspected of setting fire to his 'Ewa Beach home, which was gutted Wednesday, police said.

HEARING TO FOCUS ON O'AHU TRAFFIC

Residents who want to voice their concerns about traffic conditions will have another chance today.

The occasion is a public hearing sponsored by the O'ahu Metropolitan Planning Organization to get input on transportation plans through 2030.

The meeting is 7 p.m. tonight at the Asing Recreation Center, 91-1450 Renton Road, in 'Ewa.

MOTORCYCLE HITS TRUCK; 2 INJURED

A 24-year-old Honolulu man was critically injured yesterday when the motorcycle he was riding ran a red light and collided with a truck on Ala Moana, police said.

The man and a 31-year-old woman passenger were taken to The Queen's Medical Center. The man was in critical condition and the woman was in serious but stable condition, police said.

Police said the man was traveling west on Ala Moana when he failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Hobron Lane at 2:05 a.m. A pickup truck driven by a 22-year-old Honolulu woman hit the motorcycle in the intersection.

Neither rider on the motorcycle was wearing a helmet, police said.

KAILUA

GET A BALLOT, HELP TO RENAME STREETS

Ballots to vote for new names for Kapa'a Quarry Road and a mauka spur road leading toward Ameron Hawai'i are available at several Windward sites. They are:

  • Kane'ohe Public Library, 45-829 Kamehameha Highway.

  • Kailua Public Library, 239 Ku'ulei Road.

  • Windward YMCA, 1200 Kailua Road.

  • Kailua Information Center in Kailua Shopping Center.

People have until Oct. 31 to submit their choices. Ballots also can be downloaded at www.waa-hawaii.org.

The owners of the streets want a name change to make it easier for people to find the businesses there. Kapa'a Quarry Road was referred to as the dump road for decades. The roads once led to the city landfill, but years after the landfill closed people still called it the dump road and left trash and debris along the shoulders.

Windward Ahupua'a Alliance is facilitating the name-selection process, but the formal application will be submitted by the major private landowners and long-term lessees whose properties abut Kapa'a Quarry Road. The applicants will pay the costs of the name change.
