Magazine names Lau one of nation's top woman bankers

US Banker, a national trade publication, has named Constance Lau, president and chief executive officer of American Savings Bank, No. 11 among its 25 Most Powerful Women in Banking nationwide.

Lau will accept the honor at a gala in New York City on October 20. It marks the second year in a row Lau has been named to the Top 25. In 2004, Lau also placed No. 11 and was named "Number 1 Fast-Tracker" for transforming American Savings Bank into a fast-growing player in Hawaii's banking market.

This year, Lau was listed in the "Fast Lane" top five and was invited to appear on the cover of the magazine. More than fifty percent of those ranked last year did not make the cut this year.

"This is truly an honor to bring recognition not only to American Savings Bank, but to Hawaii," Lau said. "This is certainly a reflection of our employees' commitment and hard work in ensuring a successful transformation and the building of two new lines of business in commercial banking and commercial real estate."

In her four years as president and CEO, Lau has been the driving force behind the bank's transformation from a sleepy thrift to one of the largest financial institution in the state. American Savings has become a major player in the commercial banking and commercial real estate businesses.
