UCLA senior captain David Pietsch, a 2001 Punahou graduate, scored a career- and team-season-high six goals as the fourth-ranked UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 7 UC Irvine, 10-8, Saturday.

Pietsch leads UCLA in goals (18) and assists (8).

Sophomore attacker C.J. Smith (Punahou '03) has one goal.

MORE WATER POLO

  • Air Force sophomore Damon Jones (Iolani of Kane'ohe) scored in a 7-4 loss to Brown Saturday.

  • Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College (Calif.) junior Robby Field (Punahou '03), sophomore Arik Look (Punahou '04) and freshman Christopher Moy (Punahou '05) traveled to Hawai'i Sept. 23 to 24 to play in the BYU-Hawai'i Tournament.

    CMS split its games, defeating Chaminade 11-8 and 12-7, and losing to BYUH, 8-5 and 7-2.

    Look and Moy scored goals against Chaminade while Field recorded 14 saves in two games against BYUH.

    Also in the tournament were La Verne freshmen Sean Steele (Punahou '05) and Gerald Bolson (Kamehameha '05).

    La Verne split its games with Chaminade and lost to BYUH, 12-6 and 19-3.

    WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • Hofstra (Hempstead, N.Y.) sophomore setter Shellane Ogoshi (Roosevelt '04 of Honolulu) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week.

    Ogoshi led Hofstra to wins over Towson, Columbia and Delaware. She totaled 10 kills on 25 attempts with just one error for a .360 hitting percentage, and had 107 assists and 43 digs.

  • Columbia freshman libero Ashley Kim (Punahou of Honolulu) recorded a career-high 14 digs in a 30-18, 30-24, 30-16 loss to Cornell Saturday.

    Kim was named to the all-tournament team at the Fairfield Invitational that concluded Sept. 24.

  • UC Santa Barbara sophomore setter Ashley Dutro (attended Punahou, from Honolulu) had 40 assists, seven digs and three kills in a 30-28, 30-19, 30-19 win over UC Irvine Saturday.

    She also had 40 assists in a 30-28, 30-19, 30-25 win over Long Beach State Friday.

    FOOTBALL

  • Washington senior linebacker Joe Lobendahn (Saint Louis '01 of Honolulu) had seven tackles and an interception in a 21-17 loss to UCLA Saturday.

    Junior defensive tackle Donny Mateaki (Iolani '02 of Honolulu) and junior defensive end Brandon Ala (Kamehameha '02 of Wai'anae) each had one tackle, and sophomore nose tackle Wilson Afoa (Saint Louis '03 of Honolulu) broke up two passes.

  • Colorado sophomore linebacker Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04) and senior defensive tackle Vaka Manupuna (Saint Louis '01 of Kihei) each recorded three tackles in a 34-0 win over Oklahoma State Saturday.

  • California junior defensive tackle Abu Ma'afala (Kamehameha '02 of Waipahu) had one tackle in a 28-0 win over Arizona Saturday.

  • Tennessee senior defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona (Kealakehe '01) had one tackle for a loss of one yard and one quarterback hurry in a 27-10 win over Mississippi Saturday.

  • Occidental (Los Angeles) senior wide receiver Ric Fukushima (Moanalua '02 of Waipahu) caught a 25-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter of a 28-20 win against Whittier College Saturday. He had 10 receptions for 125 yards.

  • University of British Columbia receiver Marc Esteban (Kaiser '02) caught four passes for 53 yards in a 43-4 win over Calgary Friday. Esteban leads the team with 214 yards on 20 catches, with one touchdown.

  • Gavilan College (Gilroy, Calif.) sophomore wide receiver Shane Butcher (Saint Louis '03) had an 84-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter in a 51-13 loss to College of San Mateo Saturday. He had eight catches for 161 yards.

    MEN'S SOCCER

  • Santa Clara junior forward Keith DeVey (St. Anthony '02 of Kula) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 70th minute to help the Broncos to a 2-0 win against San Jose State Sept. 29.

  • Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) junior midfielder Derek Atta ('Aiea) scored in the 16th minute in a 2-1 loss to George Fox (Newberg, Ore.) Saturday.

  • Bowling Green (Ohio) freshman midfielder Justin Kim (Mililani '04) scored in the 25th minute on an 18-yard free kick — his first collegiate goal — in a 3-2 double overtime loss to Loyola University (Chicago) Sunday.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

  • Oregon senior forward Nicole Garbin (Baldwin '01) was named to the all-tournament team at the UniWyo Shootout last weekend. She scored her sixth game-winning goal of the season in a 2-1 win over Nevada Friday.

  • Long Island (Brooklyn, N.Y.) junior forward Erica Chong (Hilo '03) scored in a 3-0 blanking of Quinnipiac Sunday.

  • San Diego State freshman midfielder Mariko Strickland (Mid-Pacific '05 of Anahola, Kaua'i) scored in the 55th minute in a 2-0 victory over crosstown rival San Diego Sept. 28.

  • Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) freshman Lynne Guenther (King Kekaulike '05 of Makawao) scored in the 42nd minute in a 2-1 loss to George Fox Sunday.

    WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

  • Duke sophomore Tia Ferguson (Seabury Hall '04) won the 5K Hagan Stone XC Classic in Greensboro, N.C., Saturday. Ferguson, running unattached, finished in 18:10.4.

  • San Diego State senior Christal Cuadra (Maryknoll '02 of Honolulu) finished 23rd in the women's 5K University division at the 31st annual Charles Bowles Invitational Cross Country Meet hosted by Willamette University Saturday. Cuadra finished in 17:54.60.

  • Willamette (Salem, Ore.) freshman Whitney Ueno (Hilo) shot an 83 to tie for fourth place at the Pacific Women's Golf Invitational at the par-72, 6,042-yard Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Ore., Saturday.

    Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) freshman Lauren Yoshimura (Pearl City of 'Aiea) shot a 97.

    SWIMMING

    Hawai'i swimmers posted some of the fastest times in the nation in the 2004-05 season, according to the College Quick 100, done by Stu Corliss of Taper & Shave.

  • Stanford junior Hongzhe Sun (Iolani '03) recorded the fourth fastest time in the 200 backstroke (1:41.25), was fifth in the 100 backstroke (46.44), 11th in the 200 individual medley (1:45.56), 21st in the 200 butterfly (1:45.58) and was 100th in the 200 freestyle (1:38.38).

  • San Diego senior Ashley Swart (Kaiser '02 of Hawai'i Kai) was 50th in the 400 individual medley (4:19.11), 66th in the 200 individual medley (2:02.86) and 90th in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.36).

  • UC Irvine sophomore Randall Tom (Seabury Hall '04 of Wailuku) was 84th in both the 100 butterfly (48.87) and 200 butterfly (1:48.97).

  • UC Irvine sophomore Chelsea Nagata (Maui '04 of Kahului) was 12th in the 100 butterfly (53.54), 61st in the 100 backstroke (55.84) and 99th in the 50 freestyle (23.41).

  • California Berkeley sophomore Mark Eckert (Iolani '04) was 15th in the 200 backstroke (1:44.00), 39th in the 200 individual medley (1:48.20) and 65th in the 100 backstroke (49.21).

  • Cal's Caleb Rowe (Baldwin '01), who completed his eligibility last season, was sixth in the 200 breaststroke (1:55.78), seventh in the 100 breaststroke (53.31) and 32nd in the 200 individual medley (1:47.61).

  • Stanford sophomore Noa Sakamoto (Punahou '04) was 36th in the 400 individual medley (3:51.88), 57th in the 1650 freestyle (15:28.30) and 60th in the 500 freestyle (4:24.93).

  • Florida senior Nick Borreca (Punahou '02 of Honolulu) tied for 27th in the 50 freestyle (19.85), and was 36th in the 100 freestyle (43.89), 39th in the 200 butterfly (1:46.91) and 57th in the 100 butterfly (48.17).
