Police Beat: Man attacked for cell phone

Advertiser Staff

A man and a boy were arrested yesterday after allegedly trying to take a cell phone away from a 20-year-old man while riding a city bus traveling near Ala Moana Center.

The cell phone owner told police he was approached by an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy and that the boy tried to take the phone, which was attached to his waist. At the same time, the older suspect pulled out what police described as an "obvious toy handgun" and demanded that the cell phone be turned over.

Police were called and arrested the two on suspicion of attempted second-degree theft.

The 18-year-old also was arrested on suspicion of violating a city ordinance that prohibits carrying a replica gun in public unless it is properly wrapped or in a suitable gun case.

Ex-boyfriend accused of burglary

A 29-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of multiple felony offenses after allegedly attempting to break in to a former girlfriend's residence.

The girlfriend, 30, told police she ended a three-year relationship with the man in May. During the past several months, the former boyfriend physically abused and threatened her, the woman told police.

Yesterday, the former boyfriend went to the woman's home on 10th Avenue in Kaimuki, removed a screen and broke several glass louvers while trying to break into the home, police said.

Officers were sent to the scene and found the man a few blocks away.

He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary, attempted first-degree burglary and abuse of a household member.

Woman alleges assault

A 41-year-old man was arrested yesterday afternoon after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend near Nimitz Highway and Middle Street.

Police were sent to the area about 4 p.m. and found the girlfriend, 31, who said the man hit her with a baseball bat and stabbed her, resulting in injuries that were not life threatening.

Police subsequently located the boyfriend, who has no listed address, and arrested him on suspicion of two counts of second-degree assault.
