POLICE BEAT
Suspected thief caught — still in car

Advertiser Staff

A suspected car thief was so determined and patient that he was captured yesterday before he could make off with the car, police said.

The 21-year-old man went to a home on Prospect Street about 10:30 a.m. and searched through a car until he found a spare key, police said.

The car, which belongs to a 21-year-old woman, was parked in the driveway of a neighboring property and was blocked in the driveway by a second car parked right behind it.

Police said the would-be car thief asked a woman who was in the passenger seat of the parked car if she would move it so he could get out.

The passenger replied that she didn't have a key but that the driver would be returning momentarily.

At that point, the suspect started the car he was in and shifted it into reverse in anticipation of the car behind him clearing out of the way.

In the meantime, a witness who saw the suspect enter the car notified the owner, who called police. Officers responded quickly and found the man seated in the car with the engine running and the reverse lights illuminated.

The suspect was arrested for suspicion of car theft.

Teen says stepfather bit him

A 41-year-old Makiki man was arrested yesterday after his stepson told doctors at Kuakini Medical Center that a tear to one of his ears was the result of his stepfather biting him during a scuffle.

The stepson, 16, told police he got into an argument with the stepfather about 5:30 p.m. that escalated into a physical confrontation. The boy said the stepfather pointed a kitchen knife at him and threatened to kill him but he was able to take the knife away.

The boy said the struggle continued and that the stepfather fell on top of him, began to choke him and bit him on the ear.

The boy said he was able to break free, run out of the apartment and call for an ambulance, which took him to Kuakini, where he was treated and released.

Police went to an apartment in the 1400 block of Pi'ikoi and arrested the stepfather for suspicion of second-degree assault and first-degree terroristic threatening.

Teen arrested in gun incident

A 17-year-old boy was arrested yesterday after he fired a bullet from a gun at a Salt Lake home and then took a second gun from the homeowner without permission, police said.

Police said the boy went to the home of a 39-year-old man about 6 p.m. and accidentally fired the gun before leaving with a second gun.

A patrol officer quickly located the suspect and a second person who was with him and who led the police officer to where the second gun had been hidden.

Police then arrested the boy for suspicion of first-degree theft and reckless endangering.

The gun owner later withdrew his complaint about the firearm being stolen from him and the suspected reckless endangering offense was later reduced.
