Business briefs: Borders to open Pearlridge store Thursday

Borders will open its latest Hawaii bookstore Thursday at Pearlridge Center.

A grand opening is scheduled for Oct. 29-30, and will include appearances by several authors and musicians.

On Oct. 29, author U'i Goldsberry and illustrator Tammy Yee will present their book "A is for Aloha: A Hawai'i Alphabet"; poet and martial artist Lopaka Kapanui will read from his book, Haunted Hawaiian Nights; recording artist Keali'i Reichel will perform selections from his CD, Kamahiwa; and authors Mary Philpotts McGrath and Kaui Philpotts will autograph their new book, Hawai'i: A Sense of Place.

On Oct. 30, author Tandy Newsome and illustrator Don Robinson will present their book Mr. Miyagi's Magical Mystery Machine; author, comedian and singer Greg Behrendt will present his book, It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken; recording artists Nathan Aweau and Barry Flanagan of Hapa will perform selections from their CD, Maui; and slack key master Ledward Kaapana will perform selections from his CD, Kiohalu: Hawaiian Slack Key Festival.

Hawaiian Cement sells 25-acre parcel in Nanakuli

Hawaiian Cement has completed the sale of 25 acres in Nanakuli to Pineridge Farms for $8 million, according to Colliers Monroe Friedlander, the broker that handled the sale.

The property is zoned for industrial use and had been the original cement plant for Kaiser Cement. "The site was excess property and the timing was right for its sale," said John DeLong, president of Hawaiian Cement.

Valarie Joseph Boutique to open in McCully Shopping Center

Valerie Joseph Boutique is scheduled to open Oct. 16 in the McCully Shopping Center on the corner of Kapiolani Boulevard and McCully Street.

The store will feature labels such as BCBGirls, French Connection, Buffalo, Seven 7, Take Outs, as well as the Valerie Joseph private label.

Owner Valerie Ragaza-Miao has more than 22 years of Hawaii retail experience. She also owns an interior design company called Create in Color.
