Advertiser Staff

A 21-year-old Nu'uanu man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of using a gun to rob a Mo'ili'ili store and a Liliha pizza restaurant.

The man was booked on two counts of second-degree robbery and one count of auto theft. He remained in police custody last night pending charges.

The man is suspected of committing the Sept. 20 armed robbery of the Hawaiian Holy Smokes store in Mo'ili'ili. In that incident, police said a man pointed a handgun at a cashier and demanded money.

After receiving an undisclosed amount in cash, the man fled.

On Sept. 27, a man walked into the Pizza Hut restaurant on Kuakini Street, approached a cashier and removed a rifle from a duffel bag. The man demanded money, but fled after seeing a video surveillance camera, police said.

At the same time, the older suspect pulled out what police described as an "obvious toy handgun" and demanded that the phone be turned over.

Police were called and arrested the two on suspicion of attempted second-degree theft.

The 18-year-old also was arrested on suspicion of violating a city ordinance that prohibits carrying a replica gun in public unless it is properly wrapped or in a suitable gun case.
