The Hawaii Opera Theatre will host an all-Italian season, starting two weeks later than usual because of scheduling conflicts, when its 2006 season is launched Feb. 10 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

The season includes:

  • "Rigoletto," by Giuseppe Verdi, Feb. 10, 12 and 14.

  • "Il Trittico (Three One-Acts)," by Giacomo Puccini, featuring "Il Tabarro (The Cloak)," "Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica)," and "Gianni Schicchi," Feb. 24, 26 and 28.

  • Tosca," by Giacomo Puccini, March 10, 12 and 14.

HOT normally kicks off its winter season in late January; also, the customary four performances of the season's closing opera is not on the agenda for now.

    Some details:

  • "Rigoletto" — A tragedy about a hunchback jester bitterly existing in the shadow of a lecherous Duke; Rigoletto is duped into aiding in the abduction of his own daughter, turning his sharp tongue into deadly words, ultimately destroying all he loves. Cast: John Packard (Rigoletto), Olga Makarina (Gilda); Jorge Yanez-Lopez (Duke of Mantua). Director to be announced.

  • "Il Trittico" — A triple bill that examines love and death. "Il Tabarro" is set on a barge in the river Seine, and deals with its owner Michele, his wife Giorgetta, and stevedores Luigi, Tinca and Talpa, and their wavering relationships; "Suor Angelica" is set in a convent and is about a nun who had a son in her earlier life and an aunt who visits her; "Gianni Schicchi" is about money-hungry relatives of a wealthy man, Buoso Donati, whose death sends his family trying to recover his wealth left to the local monks. Cast: Barbara Divis, Jake Gardner, Kip Wilborn. Director: Henry Akina.

  • "Tosca" — The popular tale of the beautiful Tosca, caught between the political captive she loves and the villainous police chief who bargains for her body. Cast: Pamela South (Tosca), Richard Crowley (Cavaradossi), Jeffrey Kneebone (Scarpia). Director: Karen Tiller.

Season subscription sales and renewals are under way; all performances will be sung in Italian and will feature English supertitles projected above the stage.
