Woman's body found at Ka'ena

Honolulu detectives were investigating the discovery of a woman's body yesterday at Ka'ena Point.

The death was reported to HPD's criminal investigation division at about 5 p.m., and detectives were working the case late into the night.

GAS FIRM WORKER CRITICAL AFTER FIRE

One employee was reported to be in extremely critical condition after a fire at a natural gas company in Campbell Industrial Park late last night.

Emergency Medical Services personnel who took the burn victim to Straub Medical Center had no information as to the person's identity.

When firefighters arrived, the flames had been extinguished by employees. The fire was at 91-390 Kahui Street shortly before 10 p.m.

A hazardous materials unit was called to the scene after the fire was out.


KAUA'I

HINA MAUKA GETS $400,000 GRANT

LIHU'E — Hina Mauka has received a $400,000 federal grant to provide residential treatment services for Kaua'i residents suffering from alcohol or drug abuse.

The grant came from the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Community Policing Services.

It will be used to establish a network of residential treatment providers on the Neighbor Islands for Kaua'i residents, until a residential facility on Kaua'i sets up its own residential treatment center.


KAHUKU

TEACHER RECEIVES EDUCATION GRANT

Kahuku High and Intermediate School teacher Susan Luehrs has been awarded a $10,000 educational grant from the Wal-Mart & Sam's Club Foundation after being named Wal-Mart's state teacher of the year.

Luehrs also received a personalized jacket, a crystal apple, a banner for the school, a certificate and a one-year membership to Phi Delta Kappa.

Phi Delta Kappa, a national professional education association, selected Luehrs from the winners of local competitions at each Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and distribution center.

A national winner will be announced in November.

The state Department of Education's teacher of the year, Shari Kojima of Waiakea High School, was announced in September.


O'AHU

LOCAL STORYTELLERS GATHER FOR FESTIVAL

Hawai'i's best storytellers will be featured at the 12th annual Talk Story Festival on Friday, Saturday and Oct. 16 at Ala Moana Park's McCoy Pavilion.

The free event is sponsored by the city Department of Parks and Recreation and runs from 7 to 9:30 p.m. each day.

The festival also has added a "Late Show" from 10 p.m. to midnight.

On Oct. 16, the festival will honor Nona Beamer with its Tusitala Award, which recognizes exceptional achievement in storytelling in Hawai'i.

Beamer, 82, is a celebrated kumu hula, composer and storyteller.

SATELLITE CITY HALLS CLOSED TOMORROW

All Satellite city halls and motor vehicle licensing and permitting stations will be closed tomorrow.

Customers who need to renew driver's licenses or get a duplicate license may visit the City Square location on Dillingham Boulevard.

It will be open for normal business hours but with limited staffing. No road tests will be given.
